Mike Bordin, longtime drummer of Faith No More, has shed new light on the band’s prolonged silence and uncertain future. While the influential alternative metal group initially reunited in 2009 following an 11-year breakup, things came to a halt in 2021 after a string of cancellations. The band has remained dormant ever since.
Frontman Mike Patton previously revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent isolation severely impacted his mental health, leading to crippling agoraphobia. While he has since returned to the stage with Mr. Bungle, Faith No More have stayed inactive—leaving fans to speculate about the band’s future.
Keyboardist Roddy Bottum called their current status a “semi-permanent hiatus” last October. However, in a new appearance on the ‘Let There Be Talk’ podcast, Bordin offered a more candid explanation: a breakdown in communication and what he sees as a lack of willingness from Patton to move forward with the band.
“All I can say is… we’d been rehearsing for six months for these dates [in September/October 2021]… we sounded phenomenal. The bass player said, ‘I’ve never heard us sound this good.’ …And it came to pass that… 36 hours before we were supposed to be on stage… our guy [Mike Patton] doesn’t show for the rehearsal.
We go to see him… and it was very clear he was unable at that point to physically do it.
So we pull these shows and just wait to see… But ultimately, shows get started to get booked with another band [Mr. Bungle] and that’s continued to this day.
My take… is that he’s gone from being unable to do the shows to clearly being unwilling to do shows with us. And that’s heavy. That’s a big difference.”
The veteran drummer also reflected on how the situation has personally affected him:
“It doesn’t feel great to me. It honestly kind of hurts my feelings a little bit, but that’s personal… We were never gonna force somebody to do something that they weren’t able to do. And now… it looks like it’s more really about being willing to do it.”
Despite the tension, Bordin still expressed appreciation for Patton’s contributions and the band’s storied history:
“Certainly am I grateful for the time with Mike Patton? Yeah, because my life would be very different without it. But I can’t force him to do something that he… doesn’t seem to wanna do. That’s all I can say.”
As of now, Faith No More’s future remains up in the air.
