Florida post-hardcore outfit Gouge Away have returned with a brand new single, “Figurine,” marking the band’s first new material since signing with Run For Cover Records.
The track arrives alongside a newly released music video directed by Noah Haycock and represents the beginning of a new chapter for the band following their move to the Boston-based independent label.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, vocalist Christina Michelle reflected on revisiting childhood memories while digitizing old family videos.
“Before the tour, I was digitizing home videos, having to see myself as a kid from an outside perspective. I knew I was shy, a people-pleaser, and all these things, but it was different to watch it on film. I was always afraid of disappointing people so I made myself small and rarely acted outside of this little box I found myself in.
Instead of getting into trouble like most kids, I didn’t really break out of my comfort zone until much more recently. I thought I had to work really hard to be loved. I stretch myself so thin to please everyone else that it winds up being the expectation. I found people who love me, even when I am a messy trainwreck, and that toppled my entire reality. And yet, there’s still this little kid inside of me who is afraid of upsetting her parents.”
In addition to the video, the band will release “Figurine” as a limited-edition 7″ single. That pressing will feature an exclusive cover of Grauzone’s “Eisbär.” A cassette single will also be sold as a tour-exclusive item during the band’s upcoming shows.
The new material arrives as Gouge Away prepare for some of their biggest performances yet. The band will open select shows for Foo Fighters and Queens Of The Stone Age later this year, while also sharing stages with artists such as Wednesday, Ovlov, Touché Amoré, Reversal Of Man and Zeta.
