Heartsick have unleashed a fierce new track titled “Debt To Pay”, paired with a performance-driven video directed by Wombatfire (Bad Wolves, Asking Alexandria). The song continues the band’s evolution within their self-described darknucore sound and takes aim at the unspoken hierarchies of the music industry.
According to a press release, the track tackles the grind of DIY bands fighting to be seen—specifically calling out the notion of “paying your dues” as a metric of worth:
“A push back on the idea that ‘paying your dues’ is somehow synonymous with a band’s worth inside the music industry gates — and the amount is never seemingly enough.”
The band adds that the song is a challenge to outdated industry ideologies and asks pointed questions:
“What are you willing to do for your art? How much should artists need to collect in paid debt before they are deemed profitable? Who makes the rules and determines the so-called currency?”
