    Ice-T Explains Why He Dedicated Body Count’s “Cop Killer” To ICE During 2025 Warped Tour Performance

    Ice-T has clarified why he dedicated Body Count’s controversial 1992 song “Cop Killer” to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during the band’s appearance at the 2025 Vans Warped Tour.

    The moment took place on July 26th, 2025, when Body Count performed at Warped Tour’s stop at Shoreline Waterfront in Long Beach, CA. While the song itself was performed largely unchanged, Ice-T introduced it onstage as “ICE Killer,” dedicating it to ICE agents amid ongoing immigration raids in California at the time.

    Footage of the performance resurfaced and went viral this month, drawing renewed attention amid escalating protests against ICE activity and following recent ICE-involved shootings in Minnesota.

    Appearing on The Breakfast Club on January 28th, Ice-T addressed the moment after being asked whether artists have a responsibility to speak on political issues. He pushed back on the idea that musicians should comment unless it comes from lived experience:

    “No, I think [the] only people that should speak on issues are the ones that really carry it with them daily, if that’s who you are. If it’s not, don’t do it for publicity, don’t do it for hype, don’t let your publicist tell you, ‘Speak on this topic.’”

    Ice-T explained that the decision to reference ICE during the Warped Tour set was spontaneous and rooted in the environment he was performing in at the time.

    “That didn’t happen just recently; that happened when we played in L.A. at the ‘Warped Tour.’ And that was the moment — ICE was active out there. So it’s like I’m in the midst of ICE raids… I’m in front of an L.A. audience and it just came up.”

    He added that the idea was not planned in advance:

    “I didn’t know I was gonna do it. It’s time to play ‘Cop Killer’ and then my brain just said, ‘Do ‘ICE Killer,’ you know? And it went over.”

    Ice-T also commented on how older moments are often resurfaced online and reframed without context, noting how unrelated past incidents are frequently pulled back into the spotlight:

    “Anything you see on the internet, you don’t really know how it’s being sent to you…”

    Later in the interview, Ice-T framed the performance as protest rather than provocation, while expressing concern about where current tensions could lead:

    “You know ‘ICE Killer,’ ‘Cop Killer’ — it’s really protest. I’m just protesting… I think we’re headed in some very ugly terrain. I think the moment somebody shoots an ICE agent, it’s gonna get bad.”

    Since that Warped Tour appearance, Body Count have played one additional live show featuring “Cop Killer,” performing the song without reference to ICE on September 20th, 2025, at the Grand Casino Amphitheater in Hinckley, Minnesota.

    Ice-T has previously spoken about his evolving relationship with “Cop Killer,” particularly given his long-running role as a detective on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Reflecting on the song in a 2020 interview, he acknowledged that his views have changed with time:

    “I never killed no cop. I’ve written better songs that are more on point with what I believe today. You got to remember, 30-years-ago Ice is different than 62-year-old Ice.”
