Texas metalcore outfit Judiciary have unveiled the first taste of their upcoming conceptual EP ‘Stalagmite Angels’ with a new music video for the track “Wall Of Skulls.”
Set for release on September 4th through Closed Casket Activities, the five-song effort was produced by Phil Odom before being mixed and mastered by GRAMMY Award-winning producer Will Putney.
According to the band, ‘Stalagmite Angels’ explores themes of anger, self-belief, personal growth, and overcoming adversity, while presenting a conceptual world that exists both literally and metaphorically underground.
“‘Stalagmite Angels’ is an EP about anger at the world, belief in yourself, and how harnessing both in the pursuit of growth is necessary to achieve. But furthermore, it’s a concept record that envisions a subterranean world in both a literal and metaphorical sense—where hidden beauty lurks in the shadows (and in the eye of the beholder) and where triumph manifests in the ability to rise from the depths and into the world above.”
The band cited the cult classic horror film ‘The Descent’ as one of the inspirations behind the record. Drummer Austin Looney explained that the EP represented a fresh creative direction following their previous release ‘Flesh + Blood’.
“The goal with this EP was a hard reset, but we also wanted to chill the fuck out a bit, have fun, and do something that felt true to the four of us. We wanted time to reconfigure things and let the music come naturally–temper this new mindset that we’ve adopted post-‘Flesh + Blood’.”
Vocalist Jake Collinson, who also contributed guitar parts during the writing process, expanded on the band’s approach to their influences:
“90s hardcore and hardcore in general is always gonna be our natural inclination, but it manifests with different elements not only from song to song but within each song. Whether that’s Dying Breed or Cannibal Corpse or Crowbar or Machine Head or any number of other influences that any one of us may have, it all manifests in our work, and through our individual and collective lenses. With this EP, we transformed those ideas into the Judiciary approach.”
The band described “Wall Of Skulls” as a statement of the group’s next chapter while still honoring their roots:
“…A monument to a new era of Judiciary that stands on the foundation of our past. It’s an ode to hardcore and the underground scene that we know and love—it’s what made us who we are today. And though we’ve ventured into different realms of heavy music since Judiciary began, every single time we return with new skulls to add to our little slice of the underground.”
The accompanying “Wall Of Skulls” music video was directed by Wes Ellis.
