Lee Gaze, best known as the lead guitarist and backing vocalist of the now-defunct Lostprophets, appears to be returning to familiar musical territory with a brand-new project.
While full details are still being kept under wraps, Gaze has confirmed that work on the material is well underway — and that Stuart Richardson, his former Lostprophets bandmate and No Devotion collaborator, is also involved, overseeing mixing duties.
Following the downfall of Lostprophets, both Gaze and Richardson went on to form No Devotion in 2014 with Geoff Rickly (Thursday). Though that band has been plagued by scheduling issues and other hurdles over the years, Gaze has stated that this new endeavor will exist alongside No Devotion, not replace it.
In recent posts on X (formerly Twitter), Gaze hinted that the project will capture the heavier, more dynamic energy of his past work with Lostprophets:
Gaze has not publicly commented on the recent murder of his former Lostprophets bandmate Ian Watkins, who was killed in prison on October 11th while serving a 29-year sentence for child-related sexual offenses. Notably, Gaze’s new project began development prior to Watkins’ death.
In past interviews, Gaze has been outspoken about his disgust toward Watkins’ actions and the devastating impact they had on everyone involved. Speaking to the press in 2014, he reflected:
“There was absolutely nothing that led us to suspect what he’d done. I think he created such a smokescreen. I hate to rely on clichés, but when you see the profile of a paedophile, he couldn’t be any further from it. He was always surrounded by all these women, so it just seemed impossible.”
Despite the tragedy surrounding Lostprophets’ end, their legacy as one of the UK’s biggest rock exports of the 2000s remains complicated. The band earned a gold record in the U.S. and multiple platinum, gold, and silver certifications worldwide before their 2013 disbandment.
This past July, Gaze expressed lingering feelings about what might have been, writing on X:
“It’s been 13 years since my band ended in the most unimaginable circumstances and it’s still painful to think about. Things could’ve been so different. I don’t talk about it much but I put everything into that band and it should’ve lasted a lifetime. I never really wronged anyone my whole life so it seemed like the ultimate punishment.”
With new music on the horizon, Gaze’s upcoming project could mark a fresh chapter — one that channels the spirit of his past while stepping forward into something entirely his own.
