Limp Bizkit have announced the passing of their longtime bassist Sam Rivers, who died earlier today at the age of 48. The band shared the heartbreaking news Saturday evening (October 18th) via Instagram, calling Rivers their “heartbeat.”
In their official statement, the group wrote:
💔 In Loving Memory of Our Brother, Sam Rivers 💔
Today we lost our brother.
Our bandmate.
Our heartbeat.
Sam Rivers wasn’t just our bass player — he was pure magic.
The pulse beneath every song, the calm in the chaos, the soul in the sound.
From the first note we ever played together, Sam brought a light and a rhythm that could never be replaced. His talent was effortless, his presence unforgettable, his heart enormous.
We shared so many moments — wild ones, quiet ones, beautiful ones — and every one of them meant more because Sam was there.
He was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of human.
A true legend of legends.
And his spirit will live forever in every groove, every stage, every memory.
We love you, Sam.
We’ll carry you with us, always.
Rest easy, brother.
Your music never ends.
— Fred, Wes, John & DJ Lethal ❤️
Rivers’ roots with Limp Bizkit trace back to his childhood friendship with drummer John Otto, and his chance meeting with Fred Durst while working at a Chick-fil-A in the early 1990s. The trio soon began writing together before adding guitarist Wes Borland and DJ Lethal, forming the classic lineup that would define the late 1990s nu metal movement.
Over the next three decades, Limp Bizkit became one of the genre’s biggest names, releasing six studio albums including Significant Other (1999) and Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water (2000).
Rivers temporarily stepped away from the band in 2015 after developing liver disease related to excessive drinking. Following a successful liver transplant, he rejoined Limp Bizkit in 2020.
Rivers was 48 years old.
Rest in peace, Sam Rivers — your music lives on.
