Lockslip are offering a deeply personal look at the themes behind their latest single, “I’m The Same,” with a newly released music video that takes a vampiric visual approach to the metallic hardcore band’s exploration of mental illness and generational struggles.
Vocalist Sara G explained that the song draws from her family’s history with untreated mental illness and the lasting impact it had on her upbringing. Those experiences have also shaped her own concerns about mental health and the importance she places on recognizing warning signs in herself.
“My family has a history of mental illness being left untreated for far too long. Because of this, we had a pretty tumultuous household for most of my life. I have fears with my own mental health, that I may end up that way, but I am aware enough to know some of the signs. I am constantly evaluating my own thoughts and actions.”
The accompanying video was created by digital artist Freeculture.api, whose work caught the attention of drummer Noah Baxter years ago. Baxter pointed to the artist’s connection to the resurgence of low-poly visuals and early 3D-inspired computer art, explaining how those aesthetics tied into the song’s subject matter.
“Freeculture.api is a digital artist I’ve followed for years now, part of this renaissance of low poly and early 3D revival in computer art and animation. Growing up, I spent a lot of time in these 3D digital spaces, sometimes surrounded by others but more often alone with my thoughts, so when this song came together and I read Sara’s lyrics it just made sense to me, as a way to visually describe the alien and abstract way we actually inhabit our own heads.”
“I’m The Same” will appear on Lockslip’s upcoming full-length album ‘The Conversation’, which is set to arrive November 6 through Bleakhouse.
