Mastodon are taking the phrase “one-of-a-kind release” to a whole new level with a limited edition pressing of their latest album, ‘Marrow Deep’, that will incorporate actual mastodon teeth into the vinyl.
The GRAMMY Award-winning progressive sludge metal band revealed that the unusual project began around two decades ago, when they received a large collection of mastodon teeth and struggled to find a use for them. The idea eventually came from guitarist Troy Sanders, who proposed grinding the material into powder and incorporating it directly into a record.
“About 20 years ago, we were given a giant bag of mastodon teeth… not display-worthy fossils, but a collection of teeth that left us wondering what to do with them. Troy eventually had the wild idea to turn them into powder and press them directly into a vinyl record. Huge thanks to Loma Vista Recordings for connecting us with Waxworks to make this dream a reality!”
Due to the limited amount of material available, just 170 copies of the special pressing will be produced. Fans can enter a raffle for the chance to secure one through i.mastodonrocks.com/bonedust.
The band also helped oversee the manufacturing process, which involved working with a local geology department to mill the teeth into a fine powder suitable for pressing into the vinyl. A behind-the-scenes video documenting the process is available below.
