Matt Cameron of Soundgarden and former Pearl Jam fame recently stepped outside his comfort zone to tackle Bad Omens’ breakout hit “Just Pretend” as part of Drumeo’s popular “For The First Time” series.
The concept sees musicians perform songs they have never heard before after being given a version with their instrument removed. In Cameron’s case, he was tasked with creating drum parts for “Just Pretend,” the 2022 single that helped propel Bad Omens to mainstream success and earned the band its first platinum certification in 2024.
Before diving into the track, Cameron referenced another modern heavy act that he discovered through Drumeo’s content.
“Just don’t Sleep Token me.”
He then went on to praise the band’s music.
“I was turned on to that band from your channel and the music is so f*cking good.”
The episode also features a reaction from Bad Omens drummer Nick Folio, who watched Cameron’s interpretation of the song and shared his thoughts on the veteran drummer’s approach.
Cameron, a two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee thanks to his work with both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, joins a growing list of acclaimed musicians who have appeared in Drumeo’s series, which has become known for introducing legendary artists to contemporary songs outside of their usual wheelhouse.
