The increasingly public dispute between Matt Zane and the Static-X camp has escalated once again, with Zane sharing what he claims is leaked footage of Edsel Dope discussing late Static-X frontman Wayne Static and his wife, Tera Wray.
The clips, which Zane has been posting across social media, appear to show the Dope vocalist—who currently fronts the reunited Static-X under the persona Xer0—speaking about the couple’s well-documented struggles with addiction. According to Zane, portions of the footage relate to the inspiration behind Static-X’s song “Z0mbie” from the album ‘Project Regeneration Vol. 2’.
Zane has further alleged that the animated music video for “Z0mbie,” which was directed by Edsel Dope, intentionally mocked the personal struggles Wayne and Tera faced during their lives.
Additional clips shared by Zane appear to show Edsel discussing Wayne’s addiction issues and commenting on eventually taking over his role within the band. The footage is presented in short segments and without broader context, though Zane has suggested it offers insight into what he believes were the motivations behind the Static-X reunion.
As of this writing, neither Edsel Dope nor anyone associated with the Static-X camp has publicly addressed the footage or Zane’s allegations.
The conflict stems from Zane’s long-running efforts to complete a documentary focused on the final years of Wayne Static and Tera Wray. Zane has previously stated that he was a close friend of the couple and was personally asked to document their lives, footage that eventually became a record of their final years together.
Although Zane was initially involved with the Static-X reunion, relations between the parties reportedly deteriorated after he sought to move forward with the documentary. According to Zane, that effort was met with cease-and-desist orders from the estates of Wayne and Tera, as well as representatives of the band.
Despite those legal challenges, Zane has repeatedly stated his intention to complete and release the documentary. In recent years, he has continued to tease archival footage and has also shared unreleased material attributed to Wayne Static, some of which has reportedly been targeted by copyright claims.
Wayne Static passed away in November 2014 due to a fatal combination of prescription medications and alcohol. Tera Wray died in January 2016.
The circumstances surrounding Wayne’s departure from Static-X prior to his death have also remained a subject of discussion over the years, with bassist Tony Campos previously sharing his perspective on the band’s split with the vocalist.
