Longtime North Florida hardcore promoter Mike Ciero has been diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer, with the disease reportedly discovered during a recent surgery for appendicitis.
Originally part of the New York hardcore scene, Ciero eventually relocated to Florida, where he has spent nearly three decades as an active member of the region’s music community. Along with performing in bands, he has booked and promoted countless shows throughout Florida and the broader South and has also managed North Florida crossover/thrash outfit Rhythm Of Fear.
Ciero has been a longtime fixture of the Jacksonville scene in particular. During the early 2000s, he regularly booked shows at the Duval underground and alternative venue Thee Imperial, which hosted performances from acts including Converge, Poison The Well, Every Time I Die, Most Precious Blood, and The Killers, who played the venue in 2004.
His involvement in Jacksonville’s music community has continued throughout the years. Ciero has booked shows at venues including 1904 Music Hall and Nighthawks/The Archetype, and is now also a part owner of The Albatross, a DIY venue that has become another important gathering point for the local music community.
Outside of promoting and booking shows, Ciero is also known as a passionate collector of physical music media. He previously discussed his extensive record collection and collecting habits in an interview with No Echo.
A GoFundMe campaign has now been launched by Rhythm Of Fear drummer Logan Miano to help Ciero with expenses as he begins treatment and faces his recovery. According to the fundraiser, all money raised will go directly toward helping Ciero and easing the financial burden associated with his treatment and other bills.
The fundraiser organizers shared the following message:
“Mike Ciero is a loving friend, father, puppy daddy, business owner devoted and member of his community, and a passionate supporter of local music and artists.”
They continued:
“As part owner of The Albatross, a beloved DIY music venue, Mike has helped create a space where countless artists and friends can come together, create, and feel at home.”
The fundraiser also highlights the impact Ciero has had on those around him and calls on the music community to support him during his treatment.
“Mike is now battling stage 3 colon cancer, and we’re asking our community to come together for someone who has given so much love and support to others.”
According to the campaign, 100% of the funds raised will go directly to Ciero to help alleviate financial pressure while he focuses on recovery and spending time with his family.
Those wishing to support Ciero’s fundraiser are encouraged to donate or share the campaign with others.
