Faith No More and Mr. Bungle frontman Mike Patton appears to have added some striking new ink to his collection, debuting a pair of bold hand tattoos while in South America.
Footage shared online by São Paulo–based tattoo artist Marcus Vinícius shows Patton being tattooed with large “X” symbols, one emblazoned across each hand. The imagery quickly caught attention after being reposted across social media, with fans noting the symbolism often associated with straight-edge culture.
The timing of the tattoos coincides with Mr. Bungle’s appearance in São Paulo, where the band are scheduled to perform later tonight, January 31st. Vinícius originally shared the clip documenting the session, which has since circulated widely among Patton’s fanbase.
While Patton has never publicly aligned himself with straight-edge ideology, the new tattoos arrive several years after the vocalist spoke openly about embracing sobriety. Around 2022, Patton revealed that he had stepped away from alcohol following struggles with anxiety and alcoholism that intensified during the pandemic period.
Known for his unpredictable artistic choices and ever-evolving image, Patton has yet to publicly comment on the meaning behind the new tattoos. For now, the visual statement has sparked plenty of conversation as Mr. Bungle’s current live run continues.
