My Chemical Romance have confirmed that they intend to begin working on their long-awaited fifth studio album next year, while also delivering several memorable setlist surprises during their latest Hollywood Bowl residency performance.
The October 30 show marked the penultimate night of the band’s residency celebrating their landmark 2006 album The Black Parade. During the performance, frontman Gerard Way addressed the crowd and revealed that the group are hoping to spend 2027 making new music, potentially keeping their touring schedule quiet until the following year.
“Next year, we want to go make a record, so we’re probably not doing any shows and there’s no secret code to that… I mean, maybe if we get really rusty while we’re making something, we’ll be like, ‘alright, let call the band ‘Helena’ or something’, and we’ll show up. But seriously, we want to go do that and then hopefully we’ll see you guys in 2028.”
The comments provide the clearest indication yet that My Chemical Romance are preparing to work on their first full-length studio album since 2010’s Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys. Speculation surrounding a potential follow-up has been circulating for months, fueled by various hints and comments from the band.
There were also some notable additions to the setlist on Friday night. My Chemical Romance performed the Danger Days bonus track “We Don’t Need Another Song About California” live for the first time.
The evening also featured a special collaboration with The Used, who served as the opening act. Way joined The Used frontman Bert McCracken for “You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison,” marking the first time the two had performed the song together since 2005.
Way also appeared during The Used’s opening set, joining the band for “Buried Myself Alive.” That collaboration likewise marked his first time performing the song with them since 2005.
My Chemical Romance’s The Black Parade residency at the Hollywood Bowl concludes tonight, October 31, with the band’s Halloween performance bringing the celebration to a close.
