Trent Reznor Confirms New Nine Inch Nails Material: “The Fuse Has Been Lit And The Desire Is There”

Nine Inch Nails are back in creative mode. While the first new material in years appeared on the soundtrack for Disney’s Tron: Ares, frontman Trent Reznor recently confirmed that work on the band’s follow-up to their 2020 Ghosts releases is underway. In a conversation with Consequence, Reznor said:

“We are working on new stuff and we’re excited to work on it, and we are prioritizing working on Nine Inch Nails over just taking on every single thing that comes up in the other category. So, beyond that, I can’t say much, but the difference between now and a year ago is the fuse has been lit and the desire is there.”

For long-time fans, this marks a welcome creative resurgence. Reznor and collaborator Atticus Ross spent much of the past decade building a critically acclaimed career in film and TV scoring, leaving NIN’s future uncertain. Speaking in late 2024 with producer Rick Rubin, Reznor reflected on the challenges of releasing music in today’s cultural landscape:

“In the context of Nine Inch Nails, in terms of an audience and the culture, the importance of music — or lack of importance of music — in today’s world, from my perspective, is a little defeating… I kind of miss the attention music got, I miss the critical attention that music got.”

Reznor acknowledged that touring in recent years had been mentally and physically taxing, and that he wanted to approach NIN live shows with reverence, not obligation. A collaboration with creative director Todd Tourso on the 2025 Peel It Back Tour reinvigorated Reznor’s interest, leading to a creatively ambitious staging across two separate stages.
