Speaking on Jamie Kennedy’s podcast ‘Hate To Break It To Ya,’ Jack revisited the controversy tied to the July 2025 charity concert ‘Back To The Beginning’, the all-star Birmingham, UK sendoff that marked the emotional final chapter of Ozzy and Black Sabbath’s legendary career. Ahead of the event, rumors circulated that a major act had been quietly disinvited following a dispute over money, despite the concert being organized as a charitable celebration.

Unlike a traditional festival, artists appearing at ‘Back To The Beginning’ agreed to waive performance fees, as proceeds were directed toward causes personally chosen by Ozzy, including Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and Acorn Children’s Hospice. Between ticket sales, livestream revenue, and auction initiatives, the event ultimately raised roughly $11 million.

The controversy first became public when Sharon Osbourne revealed she had clashed with a manager representing one of the scheduled artists, leading to their removal from the lineup. At the time, she told Metal Hammer:

“I had a huge, huge to-do with a manager over this celebration for Ozzy and Sabbath… And I don’t care what this person says about me… because he’s now going around making up bullshit lies because I threw his band off the bill.”

Sharon later promised fans she would eventually reveal the band’s identity, but that never happened. Ozzy’s tragic passing from a heart attack just weeks after the concert shifted attention away from the dispute entirely.

During his recent podcast appearance, Jack confirmed speculation online has largely missed the mark.

“Everyone’s online speculating who it is, and I have not seen a single accurate guess. Not even close.”

He specifically shut down one circulating rumor involving Wolfgang Van Halen, explaining that the musician actually wanted to participate but withdrew due to scheduling conflicts with a tour commitment.

Jack then outlined how the event’s financial structure worked, noting that while travel logistics and legitimate expenses were covered, performers themselves were not paid.

“We’ll pay for your crew, we’ll pay your hard costs, but no one is getting paid individually… A lot of crew even donated their time because we’d all worked together for years.”

According to Jack, the issue arose when one band submitted an expense estimate that far exceeded expectations.

“It was in the high hundreds of thousands of dollars what they said their hard costs would be… for them just to show up without any talent fee. It was very frustrating.”

He suggested the demands may have originated from management rather than the musicians themselves but admitted he couldn’t say for certain.

“I’ll give the band the benefit of the doubt — it was probably the manager — but I don’t know.”

Jack also implied the Osbournes suspected inflated costs were being padded, recalling unusual requests tied to travel accommodations.

“They were like, ‘Well, all our crew flies business class.’ And you’re like, ‘Excuse me?’ My mom has worked in touring since the ’60s — she knows what real hard costs are.”

Despite repeated attempts from Kennedy to identify the act — including guesses ranging from Mötley Crüe and Foo Fighters to more tongue-in-cheek suggestions like U2 and Céline Dion — Jack refused to name names, citing potential fallout.

“I can’t because the fallout from it wouldn’t be helpful to anyone.”

He did, however, reveal the situation eventually cooled down, claiming representatives from the band later reached out to apologize and seek clarification about what had happened behind the scenes.

Even with the controversy, ‘Back To The Beginning’ remains widely viewed as one of the most ambitious tribute events in metal history. The rotating-stage production allowed artists to perform short sets with minimal downtime, creating what Jack described as an uninterrupted musical celebration.

“It was like this epic playlist all day long… the most perfect experience.”

The lineup featured an extensive roster of heavy music’s biggest names, including Mastodon, Anthrax, Halestorm, Lamb Of God, Alice In Chains, Gojira, Pantera, Tool, Slayer, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, and many more, alongside collaborative performances overseen by Tom Morello.

While fans continue to speculate about the mystery band that walked away from the historic farewell, the Osbourne family appears content to let the identity remain undisclosed — at least for now.
