Poison The Well Vocalist Jeffrey Moreira Reflects On Band’s Metalcore Influence, Says More New Music Has Already Been Discussed

Melodic metalcore pioneers Poison The Well are preparing to release their long-awaited new album ‘Peace In Place’, and vocalist Jeffrey Moreira is reflecting on both the band’s legacy and what the future may hold.

Speaking with Kerrang! as part of a recent cover story, Moreira discussed how the group’s influence on modern metalcore has grown more apparent in recent years — even if he personally prefers to take a humble view of their impact.

Despite now being widely credited as foundational figures in melodic metalcore, the band didn’t immediately receive recognition from newer generations following their 2010 hiatus. While reunion appearances surfaced periodically afterward, Poison The Well only resumed steady activity as a legacy act around 2020 before fully committing to new material in 2024.

That momentum culminates with ‘Peace In Place’, their first studio album in fifteen years, due out March 20th.

Reflecting on their perceived influence, Moreira downplayed the idea that the band paved the way for modern heavy acts outright, explaining:

“I don’t feel like, ‘We walked so those bands could run!’ or anything like that [laughs.] They had to leave stuff behind, spend years on tour, play shit venues, and slowly build themselves to this point. That’s what anyone does following their dream.”

He also noted how attitudes within heavy music have shifted since the band’s early years, recalling criticism they faced after signing to a major label despite releasing what he considers one of the heaviest albums associated with Atlantic Records at the time.

“It’s great that fans are more accepting now. We were called sell-outs just for signing to Atlantic… I’m happy that bands don’t have to deal with that shit anymore.”

Moreira added that if traces of Poison The Well’s influence exist within today’s scene, they may be subtle — though he hopes fans discovering modern acts like Spiritbox or Knocked Loose will explore earlier generations of heavy music as well.

Encouragingly for longtime fans, the band’s return may not end with this upcoming record. According to Moreira, discussions about future material are already underway.

“We’ve already talked about writing more songs… I think it’s a good sign that we’re already talking about the next record.”

He explained that the creative process behind ‘Peace In Place’ was driven by a desire to authentically capture what the band represents today while honoring their past. Holding the finished vinyl, he said, provided renewed motivation to continue creating.

For now, Poison The Well appear content to keep moving forward creatively — with Moreira suggesting the band will continue making music for as long as the passion remains.
