The relationship between members of Rage Against The Machine and Limp Bizkit hasn’t always been smooth. Tensions date back to the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards, where RATM bassist Tim Commerford infamously climbed a stage prop in protest after Limp Bizkit won Best Rock Video — an act of defiance that spotlighted the rift between the two camps.
Commerford didn’t hold back in the years that followed. In a 2015 interview with Rolling Stone, he said:
“I do apologize for Limp Bizkit, I really do. I feel really bad that we inspired such bullshit. They’re gone, though. That’s the beautiful thing. There’s only one left, and that’s Rage, and as far as I’m concerned, we’re the only one that matters.”
Even Tom Morello has acknowledged the band’s unintentional influence on nü-metal as a whole, telling Loudwire in 2021:
“For better or worse, Rage Against The Machine seemed to have planted the seeds for the genre that sprung up known as nü-metal. My apologies. Rage Against The Machine created a genre and a total fanbase that we did not serve.”
However, in recent years, it seems like those hard feelings may be fading. In 2023, Morello served as direct support for Limp Bizkit in Belfast, and now, a surprise collaboration has emerged from the California desert.
Wes Borland (Limp Bizkit) and Brad Wilk (Rage Against The Machine) have hit the studio together at the iconic Rancho de la Luna in Joshua Tree, CA. They’re joined by Ecca Vandal — who recently toured with Limp Bizkit — and musician/producer Kid Not. The collaborative session has already begun generating buzz online, with behind-the-scenes clips surfacing via social media.
Despite decades of tension, this unlikely pairing might just signal a new era — or at least an unexpected one — for both camps.
