Showing Teeth have officially released their new single “Hellraiser” alongside an accompanying music video. The track finds the project’s namesake vocalist channeling anger stemming from her upbringing and the suffering she experienced at the hands of people who presented themselves as religious authorities.
The newly premiered visual was brought to life with help from Glitterflick, alongside several drag performers who played an important role in shaping its aesthetic. The vocalist took to social media to thank everyone involved, describing the finished video as her favorite creative project to date.
“Hellraiser is out now everywhere Watch the official music video now.
Thank you to every single person who brought this video to life. Thank you @glitterflick for once again breathing life into the Showing Teeth universe. And thank you to the incredible drag artists that MADE this video: @biqtchpuddin @2leakyfawcett @adjust_rain @vhexgirl
This is my favorite thing I’ve ever been apart of. Please watch the video and show everyone credited at the end some love. And thank you for being here”
In a newly issued press statement, the vocalist offered a deeper explanation of the song’s subject matter and why drag performers were central to the video’s concept. She described “Hellraiser” as a response to the religious hypocrisy she associates with her upbringing, while also highlighting the influence horror drag has had on her artistic identity.
“‘Hellraiser’ is about the rage I feel towards my upbringing and the suffering I faced by the hands of the very people claiming to hold the keys to heaven. These people swear on a bible and fearmonger in the name of God, pandering to people in my community, all the while, protecting pedophiles and rapists in power. Hell is very real, and the devil shows his face every time someone is hurt, assaulted, oppressed, or killed because of who they are.
“It was important to me to include drag artists in the ‘Hellraiser’ video, because of the inspiration they give me in my writing, as well as to push back against the punishment drag art receives from Christian conservative media. I remember the first time I saw a horror drag artist, and it changed everything I knew about art; the contrast of the beauty and the gore felt like something I had been missing in the art I consumed. Horror drag has inspired so much in my music and my life.”
“Hellraiser” follows the release of Showing Teeth’s debut EP, ‘A Fate Worse Than Loneliness’, which arrived in September through Spinefarm Records and Republic Records. The new single continues the project’s exploration of deeply personal subject matter, pairing its confrontational themes with a visual concept celebrating the horror drag community.
