Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello has weighed in on the results of this week’s U.S. midterm elections, describing the outcome as a rejection of the political agenda pushed by Donald Trump and his allies. The outspoken musician also stressed that the fight for meaningful change shouldn’t end once the ballots have been counted.
Morello has remained an outspoken critic of the current administration, using his platform to challenge its policies through protests, rallies and benefit performances. He has also repeatedly directed criticism toward Trump, making his latest response to the election results another entry in his ongoing political commentary.
In a video shared to social media on November 4th, Morello addressed what has been described as a “blue tsunami,” with Democrats making significant gains, taking control of both chambers of Congress and flipping several areas that had previously favored Republicans.
Morello characterized the results as a broader rejection of several political and social issues, while warning that voters and activists still have plenty of work ahead. His full remarks, as transcribed by ThePRP, read:
“Last night’s election results were only the start. Sure, it was a repudiation of the ruling class, a repudiation of oligarchy, a repudiation of racism, a repudiation of ICE, a repudiation of wars overseas, a repudiation of our tax dollars being used to massacre children overseas rather than to serve our communities here. To serve our hospitals. To serve our schools. To serve our needy here.
It was a repudiation of all of Trump’s wannabe Nazi bitches. It was a repudiation of Trumpism generally, and that’s all a good thing. But the real work starts now. Yes, the voting is done. But the day after the election it’s up to every one of us to continue to fight for the world we really want without compromise, without apology, and to not let those sons of bitches off the hook.
Those that are in Washington, and on a daily basis, in our lives, in our schools, in our places of work; to continue to work and fight and organize for a more just, for a more peaceful, more equitable world. That is the job before us. Power to the people.”
Although Morello’s comments may be read as support for the Democratic Party’s election gains, his own voting history doesn’t necessarily suggest a straightforward endorsement of its leadership. During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the guitarist was asked whether he voted for Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. He responded, “I certainly did not.”
When pressed to clarify, Morello reiterated, “Did not. I couldn’t do it.” He did not disclose who ultimately received his vote.
