Slipknot’s Clown Calls New Minecraft Server “The Biggest Art Piece” of His Life, Defends AI Adoption

Slipknot percussionist and creative director M. Shawn “Clown” Crahan is expanding his artistic footprint into the digital realm with the launch of “Vernearth,” a custom Minecraft server he describes as his most ambitious project to date. In a wide-ranging discussion with The Escapist, Crahan detailed his lifelong obsession with gaming—dating back to the Atari and Intellivision eras—and his belief that emerging technologies like AI are essential tools for the modern creator.

For Crahan, “Vernearth” is not a commercial venture but a “spiritual” necessity. The server incorporates original scoring, custom coding, and utility, serving as a virtual space for Crahan to interact with fans in a collaborative environment.

“It’s like a meet and greet, but instead of you go, I get to hang out with you all night and build a tunnel.”

Crahan noted that Minecraft provided a sense of wonder that helped him process the grief of losing a child. He credited the game’s genius for allowing him to shape a world according to his own vision, a pursuit he has previously explored through modding Quake and playing World of Warcraft.

Embracing AI as a “Pocket Producer”

The conversation also touched on the polarizing rise of Artificial Intelligence. While many in the creative community remain skeptical, Crahan has chosen to embrace the technology as a personal assistant and creative catalyst. He described AI as a “professor in my pocket” whose sole job is to facilitate his specific artistic needs.

Crahan illustrated a scenario where he could feed thousands of his own poems into an AI to discover entirely new vocal structures, jokingly suggesting this could bypass the need for expensive outside collaborators.

“What’s the difference between me pulling out my pocket producer… or me trying to get a famous producer that might not even work with me and could potentially cost me $150,000… who will only give me one or two ways.”

The comment appeared to be a playful jab at the band’s past experience with legendary producer Rick Rubin during the recording of 2004’s Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses), a session members of the band have historically described as a challenge due to Rubin’s hands-off style.

The Future of the “Implemented Tool”

Crahan dismissed the idea that the current generation can halt the progress of AI, noting that younger generations will see it as a fundamental part of life rather than a threat.

“AI is the least of our worries on this planet. We currently are the worst of our worries and have always been the worst of our worries.”
