A new unauthorized book chronicling the rise of Slipknot and the creation of their landmark 2001 album Iowa is set to arrive later this summer.
Author Dan Franklin will release Somewhere Between Screaming And Crying: Slipknot, Nu Metal And 9/11 on August 6, 2026, through Little, Brown Book Group, a division of Hachette UK.
Published to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Iowa, the book promises to be the first full-length examination of the band’s ascent from Des Moines, IA outsiders to one of heavy music’s most influential and controversial acts. According to the publisher, Franklin’s work combines original interviews, firsthand reporting and extensive research to explore the making of the album and the circumstances surrounding its creation.
Beyond documenting the recording process, Somewhere Between Screaming And Crying also examines the broader cultural climate that surrounded the release of Iowa. The book reportedly places Slipknot’s success within the rise of nu metal at the turn of the century, exploring the period between Woodstock ’99 and the aftermath of September 11 attacks, while looking at how the band’s music connected with a generation grappling with anger, alienation and uncertainty.
The publisher describes the book as an examination of how Slipknot’s music reflected the increasingly turbulent atmosphere of the early 2000s, while also asking larger questions about the relationship between art, chaos and cultural change.
Released on August 28, 2001, Iowa became a defining record of the nu metal era and remains one of Slipknot’s most celebrated albums. The effort featured fan favorites including People = Shit, Disasterpiece, The Heretic Anthem and Left Behind, helping cement the band’s status as one of the most important metal acts of the 21st century.
