The Smashing Pumpkins have officially premiered their new single “Black Stars,” marking the band’s first new collaboration with producer Butch Vig in approximately 32 years. The track arrives as part of the soundtrack for the upcoming film ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping’.
The release follows the band’s confirmation earlier this year that they had returned to the studio with Vig, the acclaimed producer known for his work with Nirvana and Helmet. Their reunion marks a significant milestone for the alternative rock veterans, whose previous collaborations with Vig helped shape some of their most influential early material.
Vig co-produced The Smashing Pumpkins’ 1991 debut album, ‘Gish’, as well as its 1993 follow-up, ‘Siamese Dream’, which went on to achieve 4x platinum status in the United States.
According to reports surrounding the new release, “Black Stars” originally took shape while frontman Billy Corgan was working on a solo album. The song was ultimately reworked for the Hunger Games soundtrack.
Recording sessions took place at Chaplin Studios in Los Angeles, with additional tracking completed in the band’s hometown of Chicago, Illinois.
‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping’ is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 18, while the film’s soundtrack is set for release on November 13.
The new single reunites The Smashing Pumpkins with a producer closely associated with their formative years, bringing Vig back into the fold for the band’s first new track together in more than three decades.
