Spirit Adrift Surprise Release Final Album ‘Infinite Illumination’, Confirm Breakup

Doom metal force Spirit Adrift shocked fans yesterday (April 10th) with a completely unannounced release of their sixth studio album, ‘Infinite Illumination’—while also confirming that the record marks the end of the band.

The surprise drop arrived alongside an official statement framing the album as the band’s closing chapter after more than a decade of activity:

“The end has come… ‘Infinite Illumination’ is our sixth and final album… a bittersweet swan song marking the end of a monumental run.”

Described as one of their most ambitious and emotionally weighty releases, the album leans into a raw, urgent energy—balancing crushing doom riffs with a more expansive, almost orchestral scope at times. According to the band, the material reflects both personal and broader turmoil, giving the record a heavy sense of finality.

While the album is currently available digitally, physical editions (LP and CD) are scheduled to arrive on May 15th.

Nate Garrett Explains Decision To End The Band

In a newly published interview, band mastermind Nathan Garrett opened up about the reasoning behind bringing Spirit Adrift to a close, pointing to both industry frustrations and deeply personal factors.

“Especially post-COVID, the ‘music industry’ turned into something that I don’t love… it’s become less about art and more about survival.”

Garrett cited ongoing financial strain, increasing business conflicts, and exploitative practices as key contributors to his decision, noting that even basic aspects of touring have become increasingly difficult to navigate.

“Every other show feels like a fight—merch cuts, not getting paid… I’m having to play tough guy just to make things right.”

He also revealed a more personal and unsettling reason behind stepping away, explaining that he’s come to associate each album cycle with tragic losses in his life:

“Every time I put out a record, people I love die… my grandfather just passed away right before this one.”

Despite the decision to end Spirit Adrift, Garrett made it clear that his passion for music remains unchanged:

“I’m not quitting music. I love it more than anything… I just can’t let it become something that poisons that connection.”
