System Of A Down continue to see their early 2000s breakout era dominate streaming platforms, as their iconic single “Chop Suey!” has officially surpassed 2 billion plays on Spotify.
Originally released in August 2001 as the lead single from the band’s 6x platinum sophomore album Toxicity, the track remains one of the most recognizable songs of the nü-metal era and continues to rack up massive streaming numbers more than two decades later.
The milestone places the song among Spotify’s most-streamed rock and metal tracks, having first entered the platform’s “billions club” back in April 2023. Its continued momentum reflects its enduring global popularity, alongside its massive presence on other platforms such as YouTube, where the official video has also surpassed 1.5 billion views.
System Of A Down drummer John Dolmayan reacted to the achievement, reflecting on the band’s early days:
“This never becomes normal to me, I remember the days playing to four people including the bartender.”
While streaming figures highlight the song’s modern reach, its cultural impact extends well beyond digital platforms, with “Chop Suey!” remaining a defining track of early 2000s heavy music and alternative rock radio rotation.
The song was previously certified 5x platinum by the RIAA in July 2022, with further certifications likely as its continued consumption grows across platforms.
