New details have emerged surrounding The Amity Affliction and their highly publicized split with vocalist/bassist Ahren Stringer, with recent reporting suggesting financial complications may be playing a significant role in the ongoing dispute.
The Australian metalcore band officially announced their separation from Stringer in February 2025. Shortly afterward, Stringer claimed he had been removed from the group against his will and revealed he had initiated legal action against bandmate Joel Birch regarding ownership rights tied to The Amity Affliction trademarks.
According to a new report from Blunt, corporate filings connected to the band’s internal business entity have surfaced, allegedly showing that the company carried approximately $646,000 AUD in debt last year. The reported financial strain led to a formal debt restructuring process being implemented.
Despite no longer performing with the band, Stringer reportedly remains listed as both a co-owner and director within the group’s business structure. The outlet claims this continued involvement stems from the legal and business matters surrounding his departure still being unresolved between the parties.
The filings reportedly indicate that the majority of the debt is owed to the Australian Taxation Office. Under the restructuring agreement, the company is said to have committed to repaying roughly $512,000 through future revenue generated by the band’s activities.
Blunt further reports that both Birch and Stringer signed off on the restructuring plan, which is expected to span approximately three years.
Situations like this are not uncommon within the music industry, where bands frequently operate as internal business partnerships. Founding members typically share ownership stakes, creative control, and financial responsibility — including debts accumulated through touring, recording, and operational expenses.
When lineup splits occur before the business side is fully resolved, disputes can become complicated, as seen in past conflicts involving bands like Mötley Crüe, Fear Factory, and Static-X. In many cases, departing members are bought out to finalize a clean separation, though Blunt speculates that the reported level of debt may currently complicate such a resolution between The Amity Affliction and Stringer.
