Technical death metal outfit The Faceless appear to be back in motion, with new material currently being worked on behind the scenes.
According to a recent Instagram story shared by rhythm guitarist Andrew Virrueta, the band have been in the studio demoing fresh material. Band architect Michael Keene is also involved in the sessions, signaling a potential end to the group’s lengthy stretch without new releases.
If completed, the new material would mark their first since 2017, ending a prolonged period of silence from the often turbulent outfit.
Despite earning critical praise throughout their career, The Faceless have frequently struggled to maintain momentum due to ongoing lineup instability and well-documented issues surrounding Keene. The guitarist/vocalist has previously spoken openly about his battles with drug addiction, and later revealed in 2022 that he had also been dealing with a neurological condition that caused temporary paralysis around 2020.
The band enlisted vocalist James Dorton (known for Black Crown Initiate and Ne Obliviscaris) back in 2022. While he wasn’t directly mentioned in the recent studio update, Dorton did share the same clip to his own Instagram story on April 12th, suggesting he remains part of the current lineup.
This renewed activity follows comments from Keene in 2024 indicating that new music was already in progress, further fueling anticipation that The Faceless may finally be preparing a long-awaited return.
