Turnstile brought a massive crowd to Washington, D.C., on October 24, with an estimated 60,000 people attending the band’s free benefit concert at the Washington Monument. The show also generated more than $209,000 in donations for humanitarian relief efforts supporting people in Palestine, Sudan and Lebanon.
The Baltimore melodic hardcore band partnered with Human Concern International for the event, with donations collected through a campaign hosted on LaunchGood. The fundraiser has a goal of $250,000 and had already passed $150,000 before the concert began.
The event reached capacity, with additional fans reportedly turned away from the main viewing area and watching from behind barricades along the venue’s outer perimeter.
During the performance, frontman Brendan Yates reflected on the community that helped shape the band and the role music can play in responding to the world around it.
“We’re so grateful to have been raised by this scene, one that taught us that music not only reflects the artist making it but the people and the world and the suffering and the joy that surrounds it.”
After acknowledging Human Concern International, Yates also led a call for freedom and solidarity with the affected populations, declaring: “Loud enough for the White House to hear it: Free Palestine! Free Sudan! Free Lebanon!”
The benefit show featured a 19-song set spanning Turnstile’s catalog, including tracks such as “MYSTERY,” “BLACKOUT,” “HOLIDAY” and “T.L.C. (TURNSTILE LOVE CONNECTION).”
