Since leaving Mushroomhead, former frontman Waylon Reavis has been charting his own path, and with A Killer’s Confession, he’s finally stepping fully into his own identity. Victim 2, the follow-up in the band’s ambitious trilogy, shows Waylon and his band hitting their stride. It’s everything fans have come to expect — heavy-hitting riffs, emotionally raw storytelling, and a sound that feels unmistakably theirs.
Right out of the gate, Victim 2 announces itself with ferocity. Tracks like “Hopeless Gray” and “In Case of Emergency” (featuring fellow ex-Mushroomhead vocalist J Mann) bring explosive energy, while “Hollow” demonstrates the band’s genre-bending ambition, fusing heavy metal, pop sensibilities, EDM textures, and even trap-inspired beats. A mid-album cover of Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box” nods to Waylon’s influences while doubling as a pivotal moment in the album’s story.
Picking up where Victim 1 left off, the trilogy’s vigilante antihero continues his journey, wrestling with morality and the fallout of his violent crusade. Pitch-shifted vocals mirror the fractured psyche of the character, while the closing track, “Hand of God”, delivers a soaring, melodic finale that plunges listeners deep into the vigilante’s unraveling mind.
Waylon’s voice is the pulse of Victim 2. His seamless transition from guttural screams to soaring melody underscores both his range and the album’s emotional weight. Far more than a concept record, this feels like the most confident, fully realized version of Waylon as an artist. He calls it his “proudest moment as an artist,” crediting producers Dusty Boles and Evan McKeever for helping bring the vision to life.
Victim 2 isn’t just the second chapter of a trilogy — it’s proof that A Killer’s Confession has truly found its voice. For Waylon Reavis, it’s a culmination of years spent carving out his own lane after Mushroomhead, and for fans, it’s the most personal, uncompromising statement yet. With Victim 3 on the horizon, the finale has big shoes to fill — but Victim 2 lays the groundwork with precision, heart, and unrelenting power.
