Ahren Stringer, bassist and co-vocalist for Aussie post-hardcore favorites The Amity Affliction, has had a strained relationship with his bandmates for months. However, he never gave a clear update on whether he was still part of the band—until now. A recent Instagram post and comment he made on Sunday, January 26th, strongly suggest that he is no longer a member of the band.
Stringer’s status with The Amity Affliction became a topic of speculation back in May, when the band announced that he would be sitting out their North American tour to focus on his mental health and struggles with addiction. While the band initially framed this as a mutual decision, Stringer publicly disputed that claim, responding to their announcement with:
“I was booted from the tour with no warning whatsoever I did absolutely nothing wrong but I wish you guys all the best in the future.”
The situation remains unclear, but if the band announced Stringer’s personal struggles without his approval—something his reaction seems to suggest—that would be a serious breach of trust. Stringer later reiterated his desire to finish the tour in a separate Instagram post.
In September, Stringer shared a statement on Instagram saying he was “happy, sober, and thriving”, and that he would be playing a few more shows with the band before taking 2025 off for “continued personal growth.” At the time, he also expressed his support for the band to continue without him, seemingly suggesting that things were back on good terms. Unfortunately, that peace didn’t last.
On Sunday, Stringer announced his annual tattoo design prints for fans, noting they would be hand-numbered and signed. However, fans quickly noticed a telling line in his caption:
“Once again these will be the last Amity paintings I’ll ever make so get em while they’re hot.”
This prompted Instagram user @thenotoriousteb to ask whether Stringer was officially leaving The Amity Affliction. Stringer’s simple but pointed response only fueled speculation further:
“wasn’t my choice”
At the time of writing, this remains the closest thing to an official statement from Stringer about his departure. The Amity Affliction has not made any public comment on the matter since their original statement in May. Whether they will address it in the future remains to be seen.
