Slaughter To Prevail Vocalist Alex Terrible Says “I’m A Very Kind, Sensitive, And Open Person — I’m Not Tough”

Slaughter To Prevail frontman Alex Terrible shared a candid, wide-ranging statement on January 4, directly addressing the tough-guy image that has followed him throughout his career — and pushing back against critics who accuse him of cultivating a fake persona.

Despite becoming known for extreme visuals, including a self-inflicted facial scar, viral clips of wrestling bears, and competing in bare-knuckle fighting, Terrible says the public perception of him is largely disconnected from who he actually is away from the stage.

According to Terrible, much of the criticism stems from misunderstanding both his artistic intent and his personality. He explained that his onstage image is a character — an extension of his art — not a reflection of his everyday life.

“I cry when I watch dramas, and I’m afraid of literally everything in this world. I’m not tough.”

In the full statement, Terrible addressed frequent comments about the band’s sound, accusations that his appearance is “poser” behavior, and claims about his personal beliefs. He noted that while he regularly reads feedback about the band’s music, he understands that extreme metal isn’t for everyone — and that differing tastes don’t invalidate the art.

He also pushed back strongly against claims that his scar or image are attempts to appear tougher than he really is, framing them instead as creative expression.

“I treat my appearance the same way I treat my art. I play with it and experiment. I want to look ‘cool’ on stage, like a character from some video game. I’m a kid playing with his toy.”

Terrible went on to reflect on his upbringing in a small Russian settlement, describing a difficult childhood marked by poverty and substance abuse — experiences he says shaped him, but never made him feel superior to others.

“You didn’t live the life I lived. You weren’t in the conditions I was in. And I’ve never been proud of that, and I’ve never said I’m better than someone because of it.”

He emphasized that, contrary to assumptions, he views himself as emotionally open and gentle, not hardened or fearless.

“Believe me — I’m a very kind, sensitive, and open person. I’m not tough. I’m very soft and naive. And I never pretend to be someone I’m not.”

Terrible also addressed accusations labeling him a fascist, homophobe, or supporter of violence, firmly denying those claims and attributing much of the backlash to dark humor, cultural misunderstanding, and internet speculation. While acknowledging his love for his homeland, he stressed that online images and soundbites rarely tell the full story of a person.

Ultimately, Terrible suggested that controversy and discussion — even when negative — come with the territory of visibility.

“It’s very easy to build an opinion about a person based on their words or their image on the internet. And that actually works in my favor — people talk about me and discuss me.”
