Animal-rights organization PETA is asking Alice In Chains to lend their name—literally—to help spotlight the deteriorating condition of a 56-year-old circus elephant named Betty. According to the group, the elderly pachyderm has been a long-running attraction in the Caden Circus, where she is allegedly forced to perform roughly 300 shows per year despite mounting physical and psychological issues.
PETA claims the elephant’s health has declined to the point where experts fear she could face a “fatal collapse” if she isn’t immediately retired to a reputable sanctuary.
In an open letter to Alice In Chains, the organization asked the band to temporarily change their social media handles to ‘Betty In Chains’ for one month in an effort to raise awareness for the animal’s situation. The letter reads in part:
“Would Alice In Chains be willing to go by Betty In Chains across social media — for a month — to spotlight a dear elephant who literally spends her life in chains?
Betty’s over 56 years old, was taken as a baby from Thailand, and has been used in circuses for more than five decades. An elephant expert who recently examined Betty warns that she faces a fatal collapse if not immediately retired to a reputable sanctuary.
By lending (a version of) your iconic name, you could set the stage for freedom, amplify her story to millions, and change the course of history for all animals used in circuses.”
PETA Senior Vice President of Communications Lisa Lange expanded on the message, stating:
“By the time grunge swept Seattle, Betty had already spent nearly twenty years suffering as a circus prop, and every day that passes with her being hauled from town to town and forced to perform brings her closer to the brink of death.”
She also encouraged fans and the band alike to “Stay Away from animal-abusing circuses,” mimicking the title of the band’s classic track.
