Amon Amarth have officially announced their thirteenth studio album, ‘The Allfather Awakens,‘ and are celebrating the reveal with the release of a new single and music video for “Gjallarhorn.”
Set for release on October 2 through Metal Blade Records, the album continues the Swedish melodic death metal giants’ exploration of Norse mythology, history, and epic storytelling. The newly released “Gjallarhorn” serves as the opening track on the record and delivers the band’s signature blend of soaring melodies, thunderous riffs, and battle-ready energy.
In Norse mythology, Gjallarhorn is the legendary horn of Heimdallr, destined to sound at the beginning of Ragnarök, signaling the final battle between gods and giants. Amon Amarth bring that ancient tale to life through the song’s driving pace and massive chorus, creating what could become a future live staple.
The accompanying music video was directed by Pavel Trebukhin (Imminence, thrown) and follows the visual style established by the band’s previous single, “Upphaf.”
Unlike “Gjallarhorn,” “Upphaf” marked a notable departure for the band as their first-ever acoustic single. While both songs draw from Norse lore, the two tracks showcase different sides of the band’s evolving sound heading into the new album.
According to the band’s press materials, “The Allfather Awakens” is not a concept album but rather a collection of interconnected tales centered around sacrifice, conflict, wisdom, and heroism. Many of the songs continue to draw inspiration from the exploits of Oden and other figures from Norse mythology.
The album was recorded during two separate sessions roughly a year apart with producer Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Arch Enemy). Guitarist Olavi Mikkonen explained that the extended timeline allowed the band to focus on each song individually.
“We worked on one song at a time and made each song as good as possible. Then we recorded one song at a time until each track was totally finished—drums, guitars, and vocals. Only then did we start on the next one.”
