Chris Kontos has officially stepped away from Forbidden, but the drummer’s announcement has also revealed some apparent tension behind the scenes, with his now-former bandmates claiming they were not informed of his decision before he made it public.
Kontos shared a statement on social media on November 4, confirming that he was leaving Forbidden effective immediately. The news follows his and bassist Matt Camacho’s decision to sit out the band’s ongoing U.S. tour last September, with both musicians citing personal reasons for their absence.
In his announcement, Kontos explained that he had spent considerable time attempting to resolve several issues involving the band, management and its business operations. He specifically pointed to concerns surrounding financial matters, accounting transparency and decisions he said were made without his knowledge or agreement.
“This does not come easy for me. I have been trying to not have to do this and resolve many issues with Forbidden for quite some time now. I have expressed my concerns to the band members as well as our management, the legal team and accounting. Financial integrity, a lack of transparency of accounting, ongoing business decisions I did not agree with, or was not made aware of or told about till after the fact resulting in conflicts with the band. These issues have become irreconcilable. I have decided that I can no longer continue as a part of the band.”
Kontos confirmed that his departure was effective immediately and also took the opportunity to reflect on his time with the thrash metal veterans, expressing pride in the music they created together, including their recently released album and accompanying videos.
“I am incredibly proud of the music we created together including the new album and videos. I have never worked harder on a project in my life. I put my heart and soul into every bit of the work. I’m truly grateful to the fans for nearly four years of incredible support.”
He also thanked BLKIIBLK Records, along with former band members, touring personnel, engineers, promoters and others who contributed during his tenure. Kontos closed his statement by asking for privacy and indicating that he would have no further comment on the situation.
Forbidden subsequently addressed the announcement, making it clear that the remaining members were caught off guard by the news.
“Everyone in Forbidden wants to wish Chris Kontos the absolute best in his future endeavors. We found out about his leaving the band the same way everyone else did. A social media post. What we created together with this album will hopefully stand the test of time. Chris was an integral part of the process. We wish him nothing but happiness.”
Camacho also responded directly to Kontos’ announcement, offering a supportive message to his former bandmate.
“Love you bro thanks for making me a better bass player hope to jam with you again.”
The departure comes shortly after the October 23 release of Forbidden’s self-titled album, their first full-length studio effort since 2010. Kontos had been part of the band’s return and played a role in bringing the new material to life, making his exit another significant development surrounding the group’s current chapter.
