‘Prog-hop’ artist Ando San has officially joined the Sumerian Records roster, celebrating the signing with a new double-single featuring “Hype Man” and “Triggas.”
Ando San says signing with the label is a major milestone, having been a fan of Sumerian since his teenage years.
“I am incredibly stoked to be a part of the Sumerian family. This is a huge moment for me, I have been a fan of this label since I was 15/16 years old and it’s honestly insane to say that I am now signed by them. It’s been a long time coming and this is only the beginning. I’m bringing the heat.”
The two tracks offer a glimpse into the genre-blurring approach Ando San plans to bring to his new label home.
For “Hype Man,” the artist drew unexpected inspiration from Norwegian black metal veterans Darkthrone, specifically their 1999 album ‘Ravishing Grimness.’ He used the record’s guitar work as a starting point before transitioning into a heavier beat.
“I thought it would be cool to start the song with a black metal vibe and then lead into a heavy beat.”
Ando San also explained that the song’s title reflects the need to motivate himself while creating music alone.
“I feel like you need to be your own personal ‘Hype Man’ to get through things when you really don’t have anybody around to pump you up. It’s a super power!”
Meanwhile, “Triggas,” which features Mazbou Q, takes a more introspective direction. The track deals with personal triggers and the process of recognizing and working through them, while musically combining synths, UK-style drill, hip-hop and metal guitars.
“The most important thing for me is to be artistically authentic to myself. I have to be honest about who I am as a person to get to the originality I am constantly searching for.”
Ando San will hit the road in support of Don Broco and Unpeople across the UK later this month, marking his first UK tour. He will then head to North America in October and November alongside Periphery, Ne Obliviscaris and Greyhaven.
