As I Lay Dying have unveiled the third single from their forthcoming self-titled studio album, premiering an official music video for “The Cost To Stay.” The new track offers another glimpse into the themes explored on the band’s upcoming ninth full-length effort, which is scheduled to arrive on February 5.
Frontman Tim Lambesis shared some insight into the meaning behind the song, describing it as an examination of recognizing when a situation that someone is desperately trying to preserve may actually be something they need to leave behind. He also discussed the personal accountability and willingness to embrace change that informed its message.
“‘The Cost To Stay’ is about realizing that sometimes the life you’re trying so hard to hold together is the very thing you need to leave behind. For a long time, I confused endurance with strength, compromising until I was losing pieces of myself just to avoid conflict.
Eventually, I had to recognize my own part in that cycle and accept that real change meant being willing to start over, even knowing there would be consequences.
From the outside, that can look like everything falling apart. But sometimes walking away is the first step toward building something healthier. That willingness to change, rather than keep repeating the past, is a big part of the perspective behind this new As I Lay Dying album.”
The accompanying music video was directed by Tom Flynn, whose previous credits include work with Hatebreed and Silvertomb.
The upcoming album will mark the band’s first new collection of material since Lambesis once again rebuilt the As I Lay Dying lineup from scratch. The latest restructuring follows another controversial chapter involving the frontman, making this next release a significant new chapter for the group.
