Hatebreed have revisited their early catalog in the studio, confirming that they have completed a full re-recording of their 1996 EP ‘Under The Knife’. The project has been in the works alongside the band’s preparations for their upcoming ninth studio album, ‘Fatal Paradox’, and could eventually arrive with a documentary chronicling the group’s formative years.
Speculation about the ‘Under The Knife’ sessions first surfaced in February, with reports revealing that former Hatebreed guitarist Larry Dwyer Jr. had also participated in the recording process.
In a new interview with Kerrang!, frontman Jamey Jasta confirmed the re-recording while discussing the possibility of pairing its eventual release with a deeper look into the band’s history.
“We’ve actually re-recorded ‘Under The Knife’. We’ll probably figure out a release where maybe we include a documentary. I just went through storage rooms full of stuff and found a flyer for a show that was Fear, Murphy’s Law, Hatebreed, 25 Ta Life and One 4 One. Man, I would remember if we had opened for Fear! Wayne [Lozinak, Hatebreed guitarist] had to remind me, ‘No, Fear cancelled but we still played, it was at The Pipeline in New Jersey!’ There’s a lot of those stories and flyers where the memories are a blur and the players are gone. It would be nice to preserve some of it.”
Jasta’s comments suggest the band are interested in preserving more than just the music from their early days. The archival material he recently uncovered — including old show flyers and memories of the people and venues that helped shape Hatebreed — could provide the foundation for a documentary exploring that period.
There is currently no confirmed release date for the re-recorded ‘Under The Knife’ or any accompanying documentary.
In the meantime, fans won’t have to wait much longer for the band’s next full-length effort. Hatebreed’s new album, ‘Fatal Paradox’, is scheduled to arrive this Friday, November 6.
