Between The Buried And Me drummer Blake Richardson recently stepped outside the progressive metal world to tackle an unexpected challenge — reimagining a Dave Matthews Band classic behind the kit.

Appearing on Drumeo’s ongoing ‘For The First Time’ series, Richardson was asked to create original drum parts for Dave Matthews Band’s 1996 song “Two Step,” despite having never previously heard the track.

The concept behind the series requires guest drummers to perform along to songs they’re unfamiliar with, presented as versions with the original percussion removed. The format pushes musicians to rely purely on instinct, musicality, and improvisation.

Before arriving at “Two Step,” Richardson successfully identified several mystery tracks during the session, including songs by Papa Roach, Soundgarden, and others. Once the Dave Matthews Band track was introduced, he chose to perform his interpretation in a single take — adding his own progressive flair, including bursts of double-kick work that dramatically reshaped the song’s rhythmic feel.

The result blends Richardson’s technical metal approach with the groove-oriented structure of the original track, offering a unique crossover moment between prog metal precision and alternative rock songwriting.
