Former Turnstile guitarist Brady Ebert has been ordered to undergo a competency evaluation as he continues to face an attempted first-degree murder charge stemming from a March 2026 incident involving William Yates, the 79-year-old father of Turnstile vocalist Brendan Yates.
According to police, Ebert allegedly drove his vehicle into William Yates following a heated verbal altercation, leaving him with a severely broken leg. Surveillance footage of the incident reportedly exists, while police documents have characterized the confrontation as the latest in a series of heated exchanges involving Ebert and the Yates family.
Ebert’s relationship with the Yates family had reportedly been strained for some time, with his 2022 departure from Turnstile having also been described as contentious.
The charges against Ebert have evolved since his arrest. He initially faced charges of attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault, which were later upgraded to attempted first-degree murder.
Ebert has maintained that he acted in self-defense.
Now, a new report from The Baltimore Banner states that Ebert will undergo a competency evaluation to determine whether he is competent to stand trial. The decision followed a recent hearing during which Ebert reportedly disputed the account presented in the police report.
“Every part of the police report is a lie.”
Ebert also reportedly proclaimed:
“I did not commit a crime.”
The competency evaluation was requested after Ebert’s attorney, Mark Sobel, expressed “significant concerns regarding competency” with his client.
Ebert, however, reportedly maintains that he is “perfectly competent.” According to the report, he has also alleged that his attorney is working in concert with prosecutors and raised accusations of financial misconduct involving his previous legal representation.
A status hearing in the case is currently scheduled for September 22.
