The shockwaves from Brent Hinds’ departure from Mastodon earlier this year still linger, as the longtime vocalist and guitarist has once again taken aim at his former bandmates with harsh words.
After 25 years of a nearly unbroken lineup, Mastodon’s decision to part ways with Hinds in March caught many fans off guard. Aside from the early exit of original vocalist Eric Saner in 2000, the band had remained intact since its formation. But since the split, tensions have become increasingly public.
Hinds has not shied away from expressing his frustration online, once branding the band “a sh*t band with horrible humans.” Meanwhile, the rest of Mastodon have opted for a more measured approach. In an interview with Guitar World, guitarist Bill Kelliher described the split as akin to a marriage ending:
“Sometimes people grow apart, and they get interested in other things. We wish nothing but the best for Brent in chasing his dreams.”
Despite this public diplomacy, Hinds’ bitterness shows no signs of fading. A recent Instagram comment, captured in a screengrab gaining attention on Mastodon’s subreddit, sees him lambasting his former bandmates once again. Commenting on a 2012 live guitar solo performance of “Crack The Skye”, Hinds reportedly said:
“My Guitar sounds great, but Troy and prawn [Brann Dailor] sound absolutely horrible ..they are way out of key ..embarrassing and they kicked me out of the band for embarrassing them for being who I am ..but what about who they are? They are two people that can’t sing..together live or anywhere else in the world ..everything they try to sing in the studio is manipulated by autotune because they’re incapable of singing in key..fuck these guys ..only I know who they really are ..they are the biggest fans of them self’s .. I’ve never seen anyone in my life look in the mirror more than Troy Sanders. He thinks he’s God’s gift to anything. I’ve never met three people that were so full of themselves. It’s disgusting.”
Since Hinds’ departure, Mastodon have recruited guitarist Nick Johnston and are reportedly working on new material without him. Meanwhile, Hinds continues to focus on his other musical ventures, including Fiend Without A Face and West End Motel.

Brann was super pitchy at that point and I remember Brent was actually great. On the Hushed and Grimm tour, all 3 sounded outstanding, Brent even talked to the crowd and was in a great mood. But the last tune when they played leviathan in full, Troy and Brann sounded great but I finally got to see one of Brents bad days, he sounded bad, kept screwing up his leads and flipping off the sound guy.

Saw them twice, Once on the Heritage Hunter tour in 2012. They sounded rough, and all seemed insanely trashed. The second time was at Sonic Temple (no Brent) a couple months ago. They sounded incredible, and could definitely sing live.

I’ve seen Mastodon at least ten times. I don’t know if I’ve seen an off night, but I’ve certainly seen great Brent and disinterested Brent. I even met Brent once. He was funny and down-to-earth. But something seems off, a belligerence foreign to Mastodon. I hope he finds peace.

Alex Heffner they had to pivot away from Brent’s harsh vocals because he lost the ability to do them around Blood Mountain. His voice was almost always shot, and as the shows and venues got bigger it was becoming really apparent that something had to change.
I saw them live with Lamb of God a few months before the split.
It was a great show, even in a venue with kinda crappy acoustics.
Brent’s heart clearly wasn’t in it. Playing part but otherwise just standing there. Bare minimum of professionalism. Everyone else was putting in the extra flair and having fun putting on a show.

Neither band played the albums straight from through as they advertised it, and only played a few songs of the each. Glad I didn’t go, I would have been downright pissed off about that being outright lie of what it was supposed to be.

I saw Mastodon headline with Clutch in ‘15 and they were asleep at the wheel.
Raymond Matura saw them on that ‘15 tour having seen them a couple times prior. I felt disappointed then, but Clutch was rad. Saw them again in ‘18 when they toured with Primus and Brent was definitely phoning it in and didn’t give a shit. I know he’s had a traumatic brain injury but that doesn’t excuse being a dick. Seems like he was barely around for recording albums after that happened and just showed up to do his solos.

I’m a long time fan and I’ve seen them more than any other artist dating back to the Blood Mountain Tour. I’ve always thought Brent was the weak link. His vocals were usually the weakest of the three and on two occasions it appeared that he didn’t want to be on stage; blatant apathy.
I always hate to see an OG member depart any bands I love, but I think they made the right choice firing and replacing. I saw them two months ago and it was cleanest and most enthusiastic performance I’ve witnessed from them. I’m sure Brent’s nasty comments will keep the rest of the guys awake at night. Haha

Except the last time I saw Mastodon live (Emperor of Sand tour) they were all flawless. They were pretty rough around the edges vocally on the Crack the Skye tour but they’d ironed it all out. Hinds is just butthurt.

Brent Hinds can be a lousy vocalist in concert…worse than Brann and Troy can sound. When I saw him perform “Crack The Skye” in its entirety Brent was singing the Last Baron completely out of key and was belligerent drunk and was stumbling on stage.

People are coping hard that Brent is Dave Mustaining. Hate to say it, but it’s more like James Hetfield leaving Metallica or Danny Carey leaving Tool. As far as song-writing goes, he wrote pretty much all the solos and all of the hybrid-picking riffs, and a majority of the iconic riffs as well.
You can teach someone to play his parts but you can’t replace him as a creative energy. He was too weird and unstable.

The man is clearly not well, and I don’t think he really ever has been. It’s pretty gutting to see him behaving like this, making a spectacle of himself, regardless of his reasons why.
That said, I saw the fellas at Bloodstock on Sunday, and I didn’t miss him nearly as much as I thought I would. Nick Johnston has stepped into the role so easily it’s crazy, almost like he’s always been part of the band. Does it top Brent’s? That’s not the point. Both are easily as good as each other, and both suit the music of Mastodon on their own merits, and so there needn’t be in competition with each other.
Geo Stacks when it comes to composing though, Brent had such a unique style. All that weird chicken picking stuff and proper unique vocals too. Will certainly miss his contributions to the band. I don’t think that can easily be replaced but it’s so good to see the band genuinely seem a lot happier recently and are killing it live.
Kevin Button I see all that, but we haven’t seen Nick’s contributions in the studio yet. After this tour of theirs is done, we’re getting a new Mastodon record, so we’ll see what he’s really made of when that stuff comes out, and whether or not it measures up to what Brent had. As for the vocals, while Nick doesn’t sing, it sounds like Brent wasn’t the most reliable live vocalist anyway, with Troy singing a lot of his lines when he was too canned to sing them himself. I like his studio vocals, but if I were to pick a least favourite vocalist in Mastodon, it would definitely be Brent, even if Precious Stones, Once More Round the Sun and Chimes At Midnight are some of my favourite tunes. The band do look like they’ve had a great weight lifted off them, and that they’ve had life breathed back into them that’s seems to have been missing for quite some time.
