Korn guitarist Brian Welch recently gave a nod to fellow alternative metal pioneers Deftones in a newly shared social media clip.
In the video, Welch can be seen wearing an official Deftones x Dickies throwback shirt — a design the Sacramento band revived last year after years of unofficial bootleg circulation. He also picked up an acoustic guitar for a short cover of “My Own Summer (Shove It)”, one of Deftones’ most iconic songs.
The clip ended with Welch spending time alongside Israel Arvizu, son of former Korn bassist Reginald Arvizu. Israel has followed in his father’s footsteps as a bassist and currently plays in PlaYuH.
He was also shown performing bass on a cover of Korn’s “No Place To Hide,” picking up a familiar low-end legacy.
Korn and Deftones were closely linked during the rise of nü-metal in the late 1990s, though the relationship reportedly cooled as Deftones pushed into more experimental territory with ‘White Pony’ in 2000.
Welch previously addressed that distance in interviews years ago, suggesting tensions had developed between the camps. Still, members of both bands have crossed paths publicly in more recent years, suggesting any old friction may have softened.
For fans of both groups, the latest clip was a welcome show of mutual respect between two foundational acts from the same era.
