The rift between former FEAR FACTORY bandmates Burton C. Bell and Dino Cazares shows no sign of mending, as the two continue to offer contrasting takes on their time together in the band.
In a recent appearance on ‘Rock Hard With Phil And Tish’, Bell once again reflected critically on his time in FEAR FACTORY, saying:
“I feel, as a band, we locked ourselves in a box. And the label was expecting a certain sound, certain members were expecting a certain sound and, to be honest, a lot of fans were expecting a certain sound. Releasing anything else would have been — what’s the word? — would have just been heresy, like, ‘What are doing? That doesn’t sound like Fear Factory.’”
Bell, now pursuing a solo career, pointed to the band’s 2005 album Transgression as an example of straying from the group’s industrial metal roots:
“We did a record called Transgression. And the title in itself was a transgression of the actual sound of what Fear Factory was. Instead of being an industrial metal band, on that record we were like a hard rock band almost. And fans treated it as such. So we did it to ourselves. But now as a solo artist, I don’t feel that [kind of pressure] at all. I feel the sky’s wide open.”
Dino Cazares indirectly fired back via social media, writing:
“Fear Factory didn’t ‘lock themselves in a box.’ We destroyed the box and evolved while maintaining a core sound. It’s a choice driven by passion not pressure. I live, die, and regenerate Fear Factory, loyal to the end. Machines Of Hate Happy Easter.”
Honestly, that comment makes no sense to me. The idea that Fear Factory “locked themselves in a box” doesn’t really hold up when you look at our evolution. He later offered a broader take on his creative philosophy:
“Innovation doesn’t come from following the map—it comes from redrawing it completely. Revolutionizing a new path forward.”
FEAR FACTORY are back in the studio, currently crafting the follow-up to Aggression Continuum—their 2021 release and the final album to feature longtime vocalist Burton C. Bell.
This upcoming effort marks the band’s first full-length with new frontman Milo Silvestro, who officially stepped into the role in 2023. While details are still under wraps, anticipation is high as the band looks to usher in a new chapter of their legacy.

Mitchell MacKenzie wildly inaccurate. Fear Factory never headlined major tours or enjoyed massive success. They were a niche band who’s heyday was in the mid to late 90s. They rode the Ozzfest wave but were typically too heavy for that crowd. By the time Digimortal hit they were on the decline. In-fighting and Burt’s habit of blowing vocals live wrecked any momentum they’ve had.
They played a local bar during Archetype/Transgression. I skipped it.
Since their reformation they’ve gone on tour with Static-X then Machine Head. Big players in the game. They don’t play bars. 90% of shows sold out. They’ve also been on the festival circuit every summer playing to thousands. I’m not sure where you get your information.

Let’s take Demanufacture as point in case; pretty much all Cazares or Cazares/Herrera. Small contributions by others in the band or collaborators who were paid. Robb Sykes but you understand those records were a TON of studio magic, right? Like, I LOVE Demanufacture and Obsolete. They’ll be some of my favorite metal records of all time. But after knowing some of the guys behind all the stuff it’s hard to turn a blind eye to what he does.
I wouldn’t say he is FF either. Especially when one of the band’s strongest records was without him a part of it. So much so that he plays songs off of it live now.
Also, I think if you look hard enough in the LA and Hollywood music scenes for musicians who play/engineer metal music, they know someone who has been jacked for stuff if not themselves. Or ask the band who he did the “guest guitar solo for” which wasn’t him. Totally rad to pay someone to do a guest on your stuff, have them take the money and then pay someone else a very small portion of what you got to write, record and perform it. Then act like it was your own. I think we already have a little of that going on in the guitar community right now fairly publicly.
Dino is Fear Factory. Every album since he’s been back has been absolutely killer. Burton is just salty about the fact he’s replaceable. They tried to replace Dino and it flopped….hard.
Marty Williamson Archetype was very successful and many FANS love it, Transgression didn’t do so well as it was rushed. Mechanize did pretty well, The Industrialist didn’t fair good. Genexus was a major success, then aggression continuum took a while to varying results, and the Industrialist was re-released with live drums.
Marty Williamson Burton C Bell is the reason why fear factory thrived. When everyone left and he was last one standing he held the flag for ff.. dino came back and screwed over burton in court to get the ff name.. burton has the right to say what he wants about them.

I have been a fan of ff since 1995 I love all of there albums but I personally think dino has turned into a egotistical douchbag. Look i got to see FF with their original lineup touring on their finest album Demanufacture in 96 in support of Ozzy. I saw the new line up like a yr and a half ago and I honestly had my doubts that new singer Milo could fill the void . Well they absolutely slayed ! I got to talk briefly with Dino about my fanhood with the vand at merch booth . Both he and Milo were very approachable and generous didn’t sense any egos. It’s a shame the band had so much infighting but ill telk you Dino proved to me he is the core of the band. I saw FF w/ Milo last year in Dallas at the Granada. I thought he did great. He’s not Burton and he’s young, but I’m interested to see what they come out with on this upcoming album.

Theres just something OFF about Dino, while Burton really comes across as a genuinely nice guy. I will always side with Burton, he WAS Fear Factory. Without him, yeah the band still exists, but they just dont have the same “punch”. His iconic vocals were always the heart and soul, the identity of the Fear Factory sound. Yeah, Dino’s riffs are great too, but nothing I cant get from a hundred other bands. Burtons vocals, however, cant be matched. Bottom line, he has moved on, and continues to be succesful, and so has Fear Factory. BUT, neither party will ever enjoy the popularity they had when Burton was still in the band.

Jesse Shea Dino has tried to get both Transgression and Archetype out on streaming, I’m sure he would also re-release both albums if it were possible but unfortunately the guy behind the label for those albums is a scumbag and he wants a hefty sum of money for them that no one has right now. Dino has played Archetype, Slave Labor, and Cyberwaste live, the albums are available for streaming in other countries because they were released through Roadrunner elsewhere. So it really is legal bullshit, gotta talk to someone else about it

Also, I think if you look hard enough in the LA and Hollywood music scenes for musicians who play/engineer metal music, they know someone who has been jacked for stuff if not themselves. Or ask the band who he did the “guest guitar solo for” which wasn’t him. Totally rad to pay someone to do a guest on your stuff, have them take the money and then pay someone else a very small portion of what you got to write, record and perform it. Then act like it was your own. I think we already have a little of that going on in the guitar community right now fairly publicly.

Look i got to see FF with their original lineup touring on their finest album Demanufacture in 96 in support of Ozzy. I saw the new line up like a yr and a half ago and I honestly had my doubts that new singer Milo could fill the void . Well they absolutely slayed ! I got to talk briefly with Dino about my fanhood with the vand at merch booth . Both he and Milo were very approachable and generous didn’t sense any egos. It’s a shame the band had so much infighting but ill telk you Dino proved to me he is the core of the band. I haven’t really been into anything Bells done solo.Burton wearing the Godflesh shirt another band I got to see a couple years ago.I wish them all well whatever directions they take.

Theres just something OFF about Dino, while Burton really comes across as a genuinely nice guy. I will always side with Burton, he WAS Fear Factory. Without him, yeah the band still exists, but they just dont have the same “punch”. His iconic vocals were always the heart and soul, the identity of the Fear Factory sound. Yeah, Dino’s riffs are great too, but nothing I cant get from a hundred other bands. Burtons vocals, however, cant be matched. Bottom line, he has moved on, and continues to be succesful, and so has Fear Factory. BUT, neither party will ever enjoy the popularity they had when Burton was still in the band.

 And I’m probably alone here, but I think that archetype is my favorite fear factory record and it was Christian playing guitar on that record and not Dino. I think Dino is the one that’s a little salty just personal opinion never really cared for him.
I mean, sure he’s one of the key members that played on the Demanufacture and sold a new machine which are too very great records but literally everything after Demanufacture I could care less about. I didn’t really care for I needed the late 90s new metal garbage that they put out Which is basically what it sounded like, but I loved archetype and transgression because it was a breath of fresh air everybody was trying to be new metal.

Dino has played Archetype, Slave Labor, and Cyberwaste live, the albums are available for streaming in other countries because they were released through Roadrunner elsewhere.
