Celestial Sanctuary have unveiled the music video for “Lashed By Chain,” the first single from their upcoming album ‘Cradle Of The Rotten, Shrine To Those Most Foul’. The British death metal outfit will release the record on January 22 via Metal Blade Records.
The album’s lengthy title draws inspiration from the dark history and folklore surrounding Bury St. Edmunds, with the band weaving local legends, historic atrocities, and brutal executions into a sinister narrative.
According to the label, the record’s twisted mythology incorporates the execution of King Edmund, the spectral Black Shuck, the infamous Red Barn Murders, local witch trials, the Sunken Bells of Dunwich, and the Lantern Man.
“Lashed By Chain” sets the tone for the album with a blend of tight, fast riffing, crushing breakdowns, and dual-guitar leads. The accompanying video was directed by vocalist and guitarist Tom Cronin, who also discussed the track’s themes and the creative approach behind the visual.
“This was the first song to be written for this album and an immediate statement of intent for what to expect.”
Cronin explained that the song follows a knight caught between wealth and duty, having effectively sold his destiny to fight an unwinnable war. Its lyrics explore the desire to return to what matters, the instinct to survive, and the cruelty of false hope when circumstances offer little chance of escape.
“Don’t be fooled… there is nothing positive about this and there is no happy ending.”
Musically, the band aimed to sharpen its rhythmic approach on the new record, pushing further into syncopated riffs and sudden time-signature changes.
The video was filmed inside a ninth-century deconsecrated church built on a burial site in England. Cronin said the band carefully planned the performance shots and used high-contrast lighting to complement the album’s visual palette.
“We wanted to make a video that felt real, gritty and tactile.”
The animated sequences were created with Ben Amos Cooper to complement the album artwork by James Bousema, with the band deliberately seeking a visual style that felt tangible and connected to the record’s broader aesthetic.
