Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine has offered his thoughts on the current political climate, arguing that increased political division and what he describes as “cancel culture” have made it more difficult for artists to openly discuss their views.
During a recent appearance on TV War, Mustaine was asked whether he believes he can speak as openly about political and social issues today as he did earlier in Megadeth’s career.
Mustaine said he believes the environment has changed significantly, particularly when it comes to audiences identifying an artist’s political views and responding based on those affiliations.
“Well, I think right now, the world has changed for the worse, with all the cancel culture, all the hatred that people have. You used to be able to say stuff in the United States, and now you can’t, unless you’re the people that’s telling everybody else they can’t.”
Mustaine went on to discuss how publicly expressing political opinions can potentially divide an artist’s audience.
“The other thing is, the times have just changed. If you sing about politics, for example, and somebody can determine where your political leanings lie, you’ve just halved your audience, because the people who are one party will be for you, and the other party will be against you. And that really sucks.”
He also argued that people’s voting preferences were once considered more private than they are today.
“Before, it used to be nobody knew who you voted for. Nobody cared. And now it’s important for the hateful people in the world to find out who people voted for and to expose them for something that’s very private.”
Mustaine has previously described himself as an independent, saying in a February 2026 interview that he has voted for both Democrats and Republicans. He has also said that he believes entertainers should generally avoid telling audiences how to vote.
During the latest interview, Mustaine also connected his perspective to the relationship he has developed with Megadeth fans over the band’s career.
“I think anybody that is a Megadeth fan aren’t of that walk. I don’t think any of our fans are that kind of person who would get joy out of doing shitty things in life. I think our fans know that I came from a terrible upbringing, and that everything I’ve done, I’ve tried to make myself better, and that includes sharing everything that I’ve done with our fans so that they can get better, too.”
Mustaine has discussed political polarization and the risks of publicly expressing political opinions on numerous occasions throughout his career. In 2019, for example, he spoke about friendships, families and careers being affected by political disagreements, while continuing to describe himself as politically independent.
