With the release of their highly anticipated tenth studio album private music just days away, Deftones frontman Chino Moreno is opening up about a personal transformation that has shaped the new record.
The album’s themes of change have been hinted at since its announcement — from the albino snake on the cover to the track “ecdysis,” a reference to the shedding of skin. Beyond symbolism, Moreno himself has undergone a major shift in recent years: getting sober during the pandemic.
Speaking with Zane Lowe, Moreno reflected on how that period forced him to confront his lifestyle:
“Through the pandemic was when it all came to a head… I just did not feel creative at all. During that time, I would go down in my studio, pick up a guitar for a minute, and then I’d go put on a record, listen to something, crack a beer… every day. And then it got earlier, like 10 o’clock in the morning. I just got sad and lonely — I think everybody was feeling that way. I know I’m not the only person that was feeling very isolated and just lonely.”
That realization eventually led him to make the biggest change of his life: sobriety.
“Going through all that, and then coming out of it and then realizing that I want to do something different… I felt like I woke up. And when I started writing again, everything was a lot clearer.”
Moreno also admitted that drinking had affected how he viewed his own performances:
“I would never be able to watch any live performance of myself. If one would come on, I would just cringe… it really made me understand I was just not really happy with myself. I knew I could do better. I knew there was a better version [of myself].”
In a new conversation with The New York Times, Moreno expanded on how sobriety directly impacted private music:
“I went through that thing a lot of artists fear, like whether this or that drug has something to do with my creativity. But honestly, the minute that I started being creative without it, I realized I didn’t need it. And now, maybe because of this, I feel like we made one of our best records — it stands right alongside anything that we’ve ever done.”
private music arrives this Friday, August 22nd, coinciding with the launch of Deftones’ massive North American headlining tour.

Love that for him! The days of chugging patron atop speaker stacks are gone! 🔥
Janine Houseman . Yeah we gotta keep him around for as long as possible. Very few musicians can paint pictures with their words like an artist. Really only Deftones and Make Yourself + Morning View era Incubus have done that for me. Chino is one of a kind.
It really is an amazing album. I cannot wait to soak it up this weekend
You truly did chino, regardless of everyone else’s opinion this is one of the best deftones albums to date.
Reign Hast you haven’t heard all of it yet! And the best album in my opinion is adrenaline or got milk!
Kev Zeak It was leaked days ago
Kelly McCann no! I’m an actual fan since day one! I’m waiting for my vinyl to arrive.
Kev Zeak Same
Reign Hast have you heard it before us??
Jamie Gray NO SHIT SHACK. IM WAITING FOR MY VINYL TO ARRIVE. BEEN A FAN BEFORE YOU WERE BORN!
Kev Zeak wtf? LOL
Kev Zeak Deftones formed in 88 I was born before then LOL so yeah
Jamie Gray ok me as well!
What’s your favorite?
Reign Hast it’s not good. 3 bad albums in a row. The Deftones are not my favorite band anymore. Totally disappointed.
Daniel Cerce really hoped we were getting a return to form. We just have to admit that the Detones died after Diamond Eyes dropped…they haven’t been able to recapture that magic and they dont even seem to be trying
Daniel Cerce . That’s what I love about Deftones is how there’s a thing where there is no right or wrong way to like the music. Like you just said this is 3 bad albums in a row, which I disagree with. Gore is the only album that I don’t like from them, but Ohms is a Top 3 from them in my opinion. I didn’t care for this one
Good on him but the lyrics to “My Mind is a Mountain” seem to be about LSD to me.
Jöhnny Davis if so there’s always past experiences written about
Steve Injaychock I’m stoked that Stephen Carpenter liked this comment. Hahaha
Im glad he is sober but that new album is um not good lol
Jacks Hemoff a total borefest, except for MOTM ☹️
Eric Martin yeah to be fair havnt been a fan for years. It is boring and chino sings like he sat on a cactus
Jacks Hemoff What do you consider good? What is your favorite Deftones album?
Jacks Hemoff milk of Madonna wasn’t too much of a fan of sounded mostly like a bunch of random nois e vocals didn’t come out clear enough. I’m a mountain or whatever was just okay didn’t Impress me or stand out from any of their other works. Not sure how the rest of the album is but probably not great
Nikko Anciola it’s great. I wasn’t hyped on the singles either, but the record as a whole surprised me.
Uhm. I think you’re either tone deaf or not listening to the right band. I’ve followed them for years and this is their best work in… possibly 2 decades.
Grant Row just because its their best work in 2 decades by all means doesnt mean its good. Chino whines like he sat on a cactus.
Jacks Hemoff so then you don’t like Deftones. That’s fine, but shouldn’t comment on it compared to their other work. Chino sounds the same as he always had.
Yes you did. It’s phenomenal!!!

I duno white pony was pretty amazing…. lol
Love this guy. Keep it up Chino!
11/4/18 here!
Not listened to new album yet but been listening to your band since 98,got me through some bad times, appreciate everything this band has done for me,respect brother, btw playing at piece hall was amazing ❤️
Missy Ortiz
I don’t believe this album will be above ohms honestly, I can’t see how they possibly can bring something close to that level again
Best band ever
I’ll be the judge of that Chino
Chase Bazile anytime an older band comes out talking about how great their new music is, reminds me of movies that have tons of reviews saying Amazing. INCREDIBLE. Best Breakout Hit of the Year. If they gotta talk about it, it probably isn’t good enough to stand on its own…
Bob Anderik what the hell would you know 🤣
Brian Jones i listen to music like some people fly through books, I get a physical high when music is advanced enough where I get goosebumps and a wave runs through my body… For example, ask me for some amazing albums and you’ll probably be surprised what I say
Brian Jones I also wait and search once a week for new music like a drug addict. When I run out of new music, if too much time goes by I start feeling poorly.. I need new music to mark new experience and time passing. If the majority of music you listen to, isn’t current with the time you’re in, you’re not really present. So you could say I got my finger on the pulse and I count the days till the next beat. So that’s what I know. I feed on new music. But it must be new.
Brian albums To Hear Before You Die (by M/E)
Deloused in the Comatorium, Amputecture, The Bedlam in Goliath, Noctourniquet, Antemasque, Solar Gambling, No Dice No Bisonte…(Mars Volta related)
White Pony, Deftones, Koi No Yokan, Crosses, Team Sleep, and Palms (Chino related)
Undertow, Aenima, Lateralus, 10,000 Days, Fear Innoculum, Mer De Noms, The Thirteenth Step, V Is For Vagina, Donkey Punch The Night, Existential Reckoning (Maynard Keenan related)
Songs For The Deaf, Lullabies to Paralyze, Era Vulgaris, Them Crooked Vultures (Josh Homme related)
White Blood Cells, Elephant, Horehound, Sea of Cowards, Dodge and Burn, Broken Boy Soldier (Jack White related)
Korn’s Untouchables
Lots of Opeth
Battle of Los Angeles RATM
Radiohead’s In Rainbows
Bob Anderik artists are allowed to be proud of their own work, you know. They’re human too.
Chase Bazile if I see them talking to that idiot no talent Apple Music interviewer, I lose most interest… The second I see him, my music mojo goes out the window. Completely flaccid.
Chase Bazile Gore was my first indication that Deftones were done. The second crosses album was pretty weak too unfortunately…. I still like some songs….
Bob Anderik they aren’t “done”, you are.
Bob Anderik lol so done that they are selling out arena’s across the US and Europe, yeah very done indeed 😂😂
Chase Bazile probably with the loss of their band mate, things could never be the same, they’ll always say oh so and so is such a good replacement but, the feeling will never be the same whether they recognize that or not .. problem is, any household name, will make money with more product. Whether it’s good or not. Deftones can make terrible records till they’re 80 and some younger gens will always buy it… And that will probably always be better than starting fresh in some other career and likely failing as, he’s done mostly this for sooooo long. I say quit Deftones, 100% into Crosses. Just like Maynard should quit Tool, and put 100% into Puscifer.
Eizik Keizr Crosses is dope, but still love the Deftones
Bob Anderik you’re fucking special…
Why would Maynard quit tool
Bob Anderik this take is absolutely ass
Chase Bazile No, you wont
Chase Bazile Chase’s opinion is the DEFINITIVE one
Chase Bazile it’s a banger
Chase Bazile yeah cuz you’re the voice of reason.
Chase Bazile wanker
Chase Bazile You will be the judge of wether he likes his bands own record or not? I know what you mean just sayin’.
In my opinion and experience……whenever the artist claims that, the album is SH|T.
I REALLY hope that isn’t the case 💯🤷🏼
Micah Stockmar it’s mid imo
Got to hear it early, and i will say its truly some of the best music I’ve heard from them in a long time.
Drew Farrell 4 hours to go and you can hear the album on Spotify!
Steven Maldonado. As soon as it launched I got it on YT Music as a Premium subscriber.
Drew Farrell you missed Ohms then?
Sean Molloy i love ohms.
Drew Farrell. Ohms is a masterpiece. ♥
Sobriety ? For quitters! He had issues
Jõrge Valenzùela Örnelas as much as I love his old music yeah dudes always been a tweakerholic
Jõrge Valenzùela Örnelas Adderall!!!! He was an Adderall dad Adderall!!!! He was an Adderall dad … Popped his pills so he can pay the bills so he can pay the bills!!!!
Adrenaline was heavy as fuck, hope to hear Root or Engine Number 9 live here next week!!
Brandon Falk went to the Vancouver show and they did Engine #9 and 7 words in the encore. The did Headup from ATF too.
Krystle Iverson 😱👍

The Deftones band are fakes working for defunct US monopoly. They’re literally thieves.
Kris Fris Fields you’re Ai bro
No way this album will be as good as Ohms.
Y’all are going to see how Special Sergio was. To their later sound..
Brian Gordon first two singles sound better than anything on Ohms in my opinion!
Paul Stich. Interesting how opinions are. I couldn’t even get through them as they sounded like filler songs from Gore and that’s the only Deftones album I don’t like. I liked Infinite Source, but this album was very disappointing to me and a gigantic leap backwards from Ohms. I pity those that can’t see it as not only one of their best works, but a Top 3 Album and I’m deadass serious.
Brian Gordon I’m with you on this.
Brian Gordon I adore Ohms, and I was hoping that the new one would be at least half as good. It’s honestly way way better. Truly a top tier album for them.
Brian Gordon I said the same thing but they keep raising the bar and keep surpassing it.
Brian Gordon it’s markedly better than Ohms as a whole album
Brian Gordon . You were right. I’d consider Ohms a Top 3 while this one was to Deftones what Antipop was to Primus and do you know the worst part ? As lackluster as Antipop was, it still had one of the best Primus songs on it with Laquer Head. This album can’t even say that.
Brian Gordon it isn’t, it’s a lot better than Ohms and one of their best.
Brian Gordon Amazing how opinions diverge. OHMS was recorded in COVID period, at distance, with bad post producing, low budget, songs that looks like b-sides snippets glued all together with silver tape that lacks cohesion as a great album, and this (easy to listen from start to end) a worse record. Let it be.
Deftones the album kicks ass. Definitely fits in right after white pony and before the 2003 self titled album
Great album. Thank you ❤️
2 for 2 on the singles!
Historically sobriety and good music dont go together but I dont think they can write a bad song so I think this’ll be a good one.
Great album. ‘I Think About You All the Time’ is my favorite track.
Tim Calnan same
Tim Calnan that or milk of the Madonna
Every musician thinks their newest record is the “best.” Meanwhile, their first is usually the best.
Matt Finney in case of Deftones, almost all of their albums are amazing. My least favorite has to be koi no yokan.
Michał Olesiński yes lots of great albums but personally koi no yokan is top 3 for me
Michał Olesiński wow really? That’s in most people’s top 3! It’s a belter of an album from start to finish.
Gareth Pritchard that doesn’t mean I don’t like it. It’s just the least of my favorite. I love goon squad tho from this album
Michał Olesiński . That’s quite a hot take. I loved Koi ♥
Matt Finney well guess Deftones break that pattern. Different people think different records are their best, which means they are all great.
No hate on the deftones. I’m a fan. Just saying that when a band says this, it’s usually just a marketing ploy.
Matt Finney very true
Matt Finney Saturday Night Wrist, Koi No Yokan, Diamond Eyes, White Pony, Around The Fur. Those are their best albums.
Matt Finney . Not the case with Deftones. I find that people tend to give too much praise to Adrenaline and Around The Fur. Both are good albums as a whole and any band would kill to have them as early albums. I mean as good as Radiohead are they even say they are embarrassed by Pablo Honey. But, Deftones kept evolving and I much prefer later albums from them. I’d say their version of Nu Metal from Adrenaline and Fur has aged far better than most others of the time, including huge Nu Metal bands like Limp Biskit, but compared to other works like Riveire or Cherry Waves or Pompeji or Change, they just don’t hit the same.
Can’t wait
Sobriety sucks…
Like this unneeded album…
Boaz Yemini go drink some liquor or whatever your preferred drug is and stfu then
AROUND THE FUR is still the best imho, but Deftones, compared to other bands, doesn’t have bad albums really.
Michał Olesiński ATF is one of a kind!
Michał Olesiński white pony, ATF, self-titled, Adrenaline, SNW, Diamond eyes, Ohms, PM. I love specific songs from each more than the whole typically, unless it is the first few albums
It’s incredible
I cant get past song 4 i cant must be 30 times i listened to that song!!
Brad Rideout easily the album standout
Tried to give it a listen but couldn’t do it. Mastodon only today. RIP Brent Hinds.
It was really good actually..
Marissa Cook different, but I love it!
Ryan English didn’t rate it much on my 1st lisren going to work. The return journey completely changed my mind on it. It’s one of those that might need a few listens
I like it better than the previous 2 albums. So best music from them in over a decade. Everyone on here is haven a cry for some reason .. but looking at some profiles I would be crying to so I’ll move on.
It’s an absolute masterpiece
Very good album
I have yet to find a single song that I like by this band. I doubt that I would dig a whole album. Please just make one song that is good first. Here’s a hint, sing just a little bit, and let your f**king band play their instruments. Don’t sing over top of them when they are trying to play. Find a lot of time in your songs, that you aren’t hogging the song, and aren’t trying to be the main attraction. That would help a ton.
Private Music is fucking gold
Reading these comments have made me Realize how absolutely insane people on this planet have become. This new album is freaking awesome! Matter of fact….every deftones album is wonderful. So sad that most people have to run their mouth and talk trash for a little bit of validation in this world. We are extremely lucky to be alive at the same time this band is in existence and I’m extremely happy he’s sober now. Dude has a new lease on life and it definitely shows in his touring performance and this new bad ass album.
Kyle Gray people are free to think and feel however they please. Just because you love it, doesn’t mean everyone does. You can always just ignore the comments, but you came here seeking validation for your opinion and got upset because the majority disagree..
Kyle Gray it’s called having an opinion buddy and people are entitled to them. Last time I checked this is a free country. It’s ironic because you felt compelled to offer your whiney opinion and I still respect that.
Erich Von Schoeler Jr. def not whiney whatsoever. His comment couldn’t have been more dead on. People will trash something for the sake of trashing something, it’s so corny.
Lauren DeLeo no you guys just d riding the band. Let people have theyre own opinions
Kyle Gray some people can’t just appreciate the growth of the artists as people. They want the old, angsty/angry music they put out in their early 20s. I personally love watching my favorite artists grow and mature.
Kyle Gray 75% of the internet is fake bots and losers that need to take the time out of their day to bitch about something
Kyle Gray I don’t think it’s validation, people just don’t like anything these days, they are very hard to satisfy
Daniel CMverrryyy hard and when people are theres those other people to bash on what people are liking at the time.
Kyle Gray it’s a mix of old school fans that refuse to move on from adrenaline and around the fur and kids from tik tok. 🤮 this album is incredible. Every album they’ve made has something different to offer.
Kyle Gray become? The Internet has provided a safe digital veil to be a cunt consequence free. That’s all that has changed.
Kyle Gray welcome to the interwebs little buddy
Kyle Gray👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼cant please everyone
Kyle Gray who could imagine someone else could have a different opinion then you?
ive only listened once over so its early days, but this a very Cathartic listen, less heavy riffs, more atmosphere, i reckon it will grow on me.
It’s a good record. My favorite one since diamond eyes. It takes a few listens to get the record. Kind of like OHMS. OHMS was a hard listen,.. but the most you listened to it, the more you understood it.
Adam William Parkey . Pompeji was ♥ as was most of the other songs on them. Ohms went from being just OK to me to eventually being a Top 3 for me. The stars lined up for that one where the loud moments were golden while the silent moments were lovely such as the fingers snapping and bass groove combo in “The Spell Of Mathematics”
The album is incredible.
It was very mid… pretty mild music wise imo def not even close to one of your best. I miss the aggressive Deftones
I tell you, as a casual fan, this new album kicked my ass 9.5/10
Chino is a legend! Love this for him and the band.

So no more Phantom Bride IPA!
Dan don’t talk like that. 🍻
Peter Zacarias Not for him, I mean for me.
Dan Castle there was one place in Calgary . A high end saki / Japanese restaurant. They had it on tap .
I’d go there just for that . Gone . All gonediggly on
Dan Castle they have an Imperial Phantom Bride now
Michael Martinez I’ve had it.
Yes you did!!!
Rocked it a few times already today, solid release!!
Adrenaline, Fur, White ponty. Then a hand full of songs off following albums. And there is nothing wrong with that
Slurpee Vrölsøn I would throw Diamond Eyes in there
Slurpee Vrölsøn only this new album is much better than white pony
Private music > Gore and Ohms
Rooz Bahmani thats not a high bridge.
Ed Edwards its 13 years of crap finally decent. Thats better than nothing
But your guitar player is a moron who thinks the earth is flat and won’t fly. Wtf wants to see a “tour guitarist” fucking rediculous. Get that dude some help
Christopher Gore as long as he’s writing the original songs, who cares who plays live? Also… ridiculous*
Renee Texier your a fucking moron. Oh just go see a cover band then. Your retarded
Christopher Gore first of all you’re*. Second of all, your options are either, the band stops recording because they won’t record without Steph, or you see another guitarist outside the US. Which would you choose?
It’s one of their worst albums. Still good tho obviously cus it’s Deftones. But nowhere near their best. Most of it lacked emotion and euphoria except Infinite Source and I Think About You All The Time
Brandon Loe imo, best one since Koi. Ohms and Gore were a mess
Antonio Allodi I preferred Ohms over Private Music. It was heavier, had better riffs, and more dynamic vocals. Plus some moments where it sounds like old Deftones. This album was just decent, most of it felt lazy. Carpenter and Chino didn’t really push themselves on this one imo.
Brandon Loe . Ohms is one of their best ever in my opinion it was ♥. Gore was the only one I didn’t like. This album I liked a bit better than Gore but it was mostly 😴 for me. Infinite Source was very good, but I was bored for the rest. Felt uninspired and sort of like the band were out of ideas. I’d say this was to them what AntiPop was to Primus. 🤷♂️
Mark Cox that’s exactly how I feel! new album made me appreciate Ohms more. It felt uninspired.
Brandon Loe your not inspiring lol
Branham Buchanan cope
Brandon Loe haha, literally no. It’s a 10/10 album.
Brandon Loe Sybau
Elin Lopez big talk knowing you’d get absolutely dropped and concussed if you said that to my face 💀 phaqqet ass boy
Elin Lopez oh wait you’re a he/she subhuman. Fucking gross LMAOOOO
Brandon Loe cool story muscles
Brandon Loe best and worst is all subjective though. Thats how you see it
Kevin Schuerger I know, that’s just my take on it. As a long time Deftones fan
It’s pretty good. Better than Ohms for sure
Infinite source and cut hands my fav
sorry Chino, your best record is 25 or 13 years old
Jakub Dupej yeah, but this is very close
A little flat if you ask me
Michael Campanile they tried to redeem themselves like they did with Diamond Eyes and after about 4 times through it, there is only like 3 songs that I genuinely enjoy. Definitely better than then Ohms and Gore but that’s a really low bar
Scotrick Von Ducky . Interesting how opinions differ. Gore is the only album I don’t like at all from them. Ohms I’d consider a Top 3 from them. This album though, well…….I liked it better than Gore so that’s a +. However, it was bottom tier in my opinion. Infinite Source was excellent, but the rest had me really bored. Just felt like a record that they had to make to fulfill a contract deal. I thought I’d never call a Deftones album boring but this was it. Everyone keeps saying how amazing “I think about you all the time” was and I just disagree. Plenty of other similar sounding songs from their other albums were way better. Most notably Koi No Yokan’s “What Happened To You ?”
Mark Cox oddly enough Infinite Source is also my favorite with ecdysis and cut hands also fitting that vibe that I’m into.
There are 2 versions of Deftones and Deftones fans.
There’s me the dude who grew up on Adrenaline (still my fav record of all time from anyone) and Around the Fur and then became furious with every record after that cuz this 80sPop fusion with Heavy 8 strings and muddy sound with synth everywhere.
Then there’s people who like the softer synth side of the band (I hate computer sounding music) and THEN they got dude from Quicksand and Diamond Eyes is what SHOULD have been after Around the Fur. Then they just got more and more synth oriented. Koy was ok at best (swerve city slaps) but it makes me crazy. That’s why I won’t pay to see them anymore. I’ll be lucky if I get 7 words, nah mean?? lol
Scotrick Von Ducky Ohms had better riffs and more range out of Chino. Private Music is just a good “vibey” album
Michael Campanile I agree..it’s nothing spectacular….
Chris Munoz your nothing spectacular lol
Michael Campanile we didn’t
I actually think this is the strongest album they’ve had in a very long time. I love the vibe they went with and the music seems so good that I can only assume they were actually inspired and fully on with this album.
Michael Campanile thats because you have a profile pic of you playing guitar
Michael Campanile. 🤷♂️
Michael Campanile like you could do better lol go with your Taylor Swift shit
Michael Campanile if a little flat is the price to pay for a guy being healthy and happy instead of drunk or dead from an OD ill fucking take it because they are.still.the most consistent band ever. We have lost to many good ones early already. Don’t need to here jsut so you can feel better about the sound. What a way to be a fucking dick.
Michael Campanile I agree I think it’s boring
Michael Campanile sadly, I agree.
Geez I’ve love them for 30 yrs and I was so excited for this album.
There is so much reverb/echo/whatever the official musics terminology is on Chino’s vocals it drives me crazy. I love his voice so much. It just sounds over produced and shoegaze-ish, nearly the whole album. There are like 2 moments when I thought ooo maybe this is the banger…but alas, no. I even went for a drives and did the loud volume car test.
Well, it’s still better than nothing, and they have so many other good albums we can still listen to.
🥰
Jenny Harris yeah, I heard the reverb’nis as well. However, I really think it’s a killer album. Take it or leave it,
Jenny Harris thankful the worst is behind us…yeah, the ones that got me hooked back in the late nineties and early 2000’s. Each album keeps getting better
Michael Campanile ooooooo shhhht!!! ahhaha i guess.. we all have our own opinions and taste, i do Think, might be one of the best sht they have ever done… ive been a fan for years, and i LOVE IT ALL jaja and yeah they did do some fckn awesome things in the past, but (again, for me) this album is iconic, after so many years, they made something great without losing their “sound” and vibe… and that is something that not many bands or artists have been able to do from that “era”.. again.. my humble opinion, and yes we are all entitled to our own.. but “FLAT”?? that is not what i would describe it, sorry u did not get the goosebumps like a bunch of us did 🖤🐍
Michael Campanile well we didn’t ask you
Michael Campanile understatement
Michael Campanile you’re right… he should totally be a drunk again.
They’ve never made a bad album
The best album of the year, hands down 🔥
Loved it actually
I’ve listened to it twice and I’m digging it. It doesn’t feel forced like GORE and Ohms. It sounds like they not only had fun making it, but actually took their time. I’m not saying it’s their best, but it’s a great album.
It’s actually good asf
Im currently listening to it right now. And im definitely enjoying it so far.
Found it completely boring. Not a single stand out song
It’s a very good album and so happy for his sobriety.
Private Music must be your favorite record.
All these critics in the comments. Just enjoy some more Deftones and shut up.
It’s a great album just wish there was more tracks a little longer then 40 some min!
I hope they make many more albums
Well it took one straight through listen I was like yes the whole thing rocks!
Awesome!!!!!!!
Definitely one of the best albums
Been listening to them since ‘95. This album is a masterpiece, hands down.

He needs to start drinking again, the passion is gone, this album is the weakest and most generic album they have released so far…
Matthew Jason Myers. I don’t know about drinking again, especially as he gets up there in age. I think it would be a tragic loss if his health plummeted or he died in a car crash or some shit. I just think he needs to take a break from his side projects to only focus on Deftones again and they really need to bring back Sergio. His bass playing was sorely missed

Not bad at all, enjoyable , but nothing like the First three albums
Deftones is my favourite band ever has been since they’re beginning but if you call this one one of the best albums you have to start cracking beers 🍺 again cause doesn’t sound like it
Every song sounds so similar you have to look to see it’s on a new track.
I thought it was boring. Sad
Marc Cardinal . I just think he needs to take a break from his side projects to only focus on Deftones again and they really need to bring back Sergio. His bass playing was sorely missed
Mark Cox what are the side projects? I remember palms which was cool. crosses was ok but nothing memorable. its sad that the last album i enjoyed was released in 2012
Marc Cardinal . Saudade is another one. I found out recently that Fred, the new bassist, was the prime writer for the new album. I think he doesn’t need to write anything else again cause wtf. I thought it was boring too. Reminds me when Soundgarden had Hiro and he wrote the Circle of Power song and never another hahaha. They need Sergio back for real. But hey nothing will change. Deftones “Super Fans” will be combative with people like us and say Private Music is the best they’ve ever made and should be Album of the Year
Listening to that album I kept waiting for something different to happen and it didn’t.
Best album since diamond eyes.
Amazing album!!! They did not disappoint. Already have 5 songs added to my Playlists. Infinite Source is my favorite on the album. Still my #1 favorite band. You can tell they put a lot of work into this record. True Deftones fans will not be dissapointed.
It’s definitely one of their best.
I know it was a helluva lot better than Ohms that’s for sure
Luke Fredericks Put down the meth pipe. Ohms not the best, but definitely better than Private Music. PM is mid.
Aaron Urban yeh, Ohms was great
The more I listen to this album (10+ times now) the more is sounds like a beautiful memory, it just feels so nostalgic and dream like, utterly brilliant
Only song I liked on it was Infinite Source. The album was really boring to me and only narrowly beats out Gore as my two least favorite albums from them. They need to bring back Sergio on bass cause damn was I missing him. He’s the closest person that can ever play bass since Che is gone. This album felt like a lot of filler songs when Ohms was beautiful and had a lot of amazing songs throughout and even the filler song “Radiant City” had some incredible grooving techniques. I’m glad most are enjoying this album, but that’s a no from me man. Mind boggling how some are comparing Milk Of The Madonna to Mein. Anything mildly interesting on this album was done 10X better on Koi No Yokan.
Mark Cox I’m pretty sure it’s you that’s boring
The record is AMAZING as expected
Deftones always deliver . Such an
Amazing talented band. Every record showcases amazing songwriting and production
Haters move on
I can see how he thinks that but this is not a Deftones record. This is like a collaboration between crosses and Deftones and I realize that the singer is the same, but he’s definitely sounds more like the techniques or vocals that he uses on process albums and he needs to stop doing that like belting voice and only do the screens if you like if it’s natural it’s like Not planned it kind of seems like it’s planned like it’s expected. I’ve only listened to the album once I give it a C
I agree
It’s decent but not nearly as good as Ohms.
Chino Moreno on not being able write interesting lyrics or melodies, always singing the same way every song, and not being able to hit notes live.
6/10
I would t say it’s one of their best but it’s not terrible. It’s not Gore …
Need to noodle this album more. Lyrically it’s saying something important and I need to stop and pay closer attention to what’s being said.
It’s boring. The whole album. Not to mention Ohms, Gore, and Private Music are THE worst mixed albums they have ever made. Koi No Yokan was the last good album they made. It’s been a steady decline since then and did I mention how terrible the mixing and mastering are on these albums?
Tyler Kirkpatrick buy new earphones and listen Spotify on low quality. Problem solved. Or fix your auditive system.
It’s ok to call OHMS as a bad production for the reason how it was recorded (at distance, COVID period, bad relationship inside the band and so on). But Private music? It’s a whole different story.
Dalton Menoncin You seem offended and emotionally invested in their terribly produced, mixed, and mastered albums. I’m sorry if your feelings are hurt but I have high quality headphones and a high definition sound system. Regardless, good mixing and mastering is supposed to make your music sound good on anything.
If you’re casual or not, this album is a great joy to easily listen all over. The only problem is that it ends way too fast (maybe cose it’s really enjoyable). Then you listen it all over again and there is no moment for “oh no that part” but “fuck yeah I love this part”.
Taking my son to see Deftones in Cleveland in couple weeks. Gonna be honest though, wasn’t very impressed with this album. I have couple hour drive there so maybe I’ll give it another listen. But first impression wasn’t great
I agree. It’s top 3 for me
Fuck no more deftones beer??
Monotones
No way, fat Chino and not sober Chino made the best albums
A stretch. A Deftones fan since adrenaline. Man, 🤦♂️
Very good🤘 I wouldnt say the BEST… But they all are GREAT …. 🤷
Cut Hands sounds like RUSH a little bit …. I’m cool with it ….
It all sounds the same to me
I dont think its that good
It was def a grower, not a show-er. I had to really sit down and take it in. Only a couple songs took right away.
I know these dudes are pushing 60, but I need some Royal, some Hexagram, some When Girls Telephone Boys rippers where the tunes are heavy and the screams are intense
Dude, Cut hands is phenomenal! Takes me back to 1998 lol. I love it!
It’s fantastic
Sorry it’s not good and not one of their best albums he has written. That’s just my opinion though. Sorry chino lol
Easily their best since Koi. Good for you Chino!
It’s an amazing record !
i really loved it tbh!!!
Nah… this album is only slightly better than gore and that’s the worst one.
Sober = shit music. The latest album is a testament to just that. 🗑️
It’s great. They all are though
Love it. Old school listener.
I completely agree. I thought Chevelle would win album of the year but these two are going head to head idk which one to pick… so instead I rock out in pure ethereal bliss! 🤘. #legends
Definitely up there with White Pony and Diamond Eyes
Only good song is infinity source
Its a great album
Great album. It’s really their most vibe-first, layered album in a while. I liked it at first, but grew to love it on repeat as the layers peeled back and I processed the different sounds and lyrics.
It’s very pretty on first listen, but much deeper than you’d initially give it credit for, as the sheen hides a lot of luscious grooves that set in over time. Despite the beauty, it’s a grower not a shower.
A lot better than ohms but not nearly their best work. I enjoyed it though. Nothing to really hate. But no generational bangers either.
Love it to the bones 🛹🥰
I love it and I can’t think of reasons to dislike my favorite band🤷🏻♂️
I love it gets better every listen
Fucking masterpiece
The new album is amazing!! Love it
It flows
Every song is good and they sound amazing
past their prime , yet relevant. The Deftones story.
its so fkn boring ..adrenaline and white pony and chino says this is best ..u need a fkn drink pal
Everybody gotta be a music critic or influencer lol. Album is good 💕
I challenge anyone bitching to show me a better album you wrote and recorded ✌️ throw me a link if you dare.
This album to me, has a perfect mixture of old school/new school deftones, I personally love it! It definitely has some classic deftones feel❤️
I’d rank the 10 albums in this order. I don’t consider any of them bad, but i believe their later material is better than their early stuff as a whole. People are free to disagree and I love all of the albums as a whole.
It amazes me how a 30+ year old band is still producing amazing music with no awful albums. The fact that their latest one was placed in my Top 3 is almost unheard of. “I Think About You All The Time” had me in tears.
I highly recommend the new album. I don’t think Ohms gets the love it deserves tbh. Headless is my favorite Deftones song and one I consider the most complete. Anyone that doesn’t like Gore should at least give “(L) MIRL” a fair listen. It is beautiful.
10. Adrenaline
9. Around The Fur
8. Deftones
7. Saturday Night Wrist
6. Gore
5. Koi No Yokan
4. Diamond Eyes
3. Private Music
2. Ohms
1. White Pony.
I mean, that’s pushing it. It’s good but I wouldn’t put it Top 2…
Why is every fanbase toxic af? Every fanbase I’ve seen online hates anyone having a less then positive opinion about what they like
So much respect for Chino on his journey with sobriety. I am a forever fan, because when you have money and fans and can basically do what you want to feel better- and STILL you choose your own health- that shows integrity. He looked great on stage- healthy and moving incredibly well for a 50-some year old!
Glad to hear. Sobriety feels great and everything truly seems to get much clearer. Good article.
