DEFTONES’ Chino Moreno Confirms Shelved 2008 Album “Eros” Will Likely Remain Unreleased

Fans hoping to one day hear Deftones’ unfinished 2008 album Eros are likely out of luck. The project was ultimately shelved following a tragic November 2008 car accident that left bassist Chi Cheng with a traumatic brain injury, which eventually led to his death in 2013. With the emotional weight surrounding that period, the band chose to move forward and start fresh, resulting in 2010’s Diamond Eyes.

Despite its absence from the official catalog, Eros has taken on near-mythical status among fans eager to hear both the music and Cheng’s final recordings. In 2014, Deftones streamed the song “Smile” from the album, later performing it live. Some demo material has also leaked over the years, giving fans glimpses of what might have been.

However, in a recent Q&A with The Guardian, vocalist/guitarist Chino Moreno suggested that a proper release is highly unlikely. When asked about Eros, Moreno said:

“We’re always asked about ‘Eros’. It will most likely never see the light of day. That would involve going back to that period and resurrecting unfinished things, and somehow bringing them to completion. ‘Dallas’ is the only song that was anywhere near finished.

This new album started with ideas we’d been working on alone, through the pandemic. And when we got together to actually start making the record, none of us wanted to look back at those ideas from the pandemic – we wanted to capture the moment we’re in today.

So going back to try to capture what was happening back during ‘Eros’, and finishing those ideas, doesn’t really make sense.”

Deftones just released their tenth studio album, private music, on August 22nd, marking a new chapter in the band’s storied career.
