As Sepultura prepare to bring their legendary career to a close later this year, vocalist Derrick Green has confirmed he is already working on his next musical chapter.
Speaking in a recent interview with Heavy Matters, Green said he has been actively assembling a new band while continuing to pursue other passions including photography, fitness, and plant-based health.
“…I’ve always been into photography, and I will continue to do that. I’ve been really into fitness and health and this plant-based world, and I’ll continue doing that. And I will continue doing music. I definitely would love to do another band. And I’m putting that together as we speak.”
Green also admitted that finding the right lineup after spending decades with the same bandmates has been both challenging and exciting.
“Trying to align with certain people, it’s like starting from scratch — well, not necessarily from scratch, but it’s definitely a challenge to form that connection with people again — different people. After being with a band for so long — I’ve been especially with Andreas and Paulo for so many years, since like 1998… It’s exciting, I have to say.”
When asked what direction the new project could take, Green suggested fans can expect a mix of influences from his years in Sepultura, his hardcore roots, and more melodic material.
“I was able to learn so much and take away so much being with Sepultura, and I will use different elements from that. Then, the hardcore, of course, it’s always flowing in my blood… So I wanna have a mix of that, and for sure have a heavy groove on whatever it is I’m gonna do in the future.”
The timing of Green’s comments coincides with the release of Sepultura’s new EP ‘The Cloud Of Unknowing’, which arrived today, April 24. The band has not yet announced the final date of their farewell tour, but a lengthy run of North American and European shows remains on the schedule.
