Disturbed’s David Draiman Addresses IDF Shell Controversy, Says He Has “Compassion For The Palestinian People”

Disturbed vocalist David Draiman has again spoken publicly about the backlash tied to his support of Israel and the controversial 2024 photo showing him signing an Israel Defense Forces artillery shell with the phrase “Fuck Hamas.”

Draiman’s support of Israel following the October 7th, 2023 Hamas-led attack has drawn strong criticism from opponents who accused him of endorsing violence and ignoring Palestinian civilian casualties. The shell-signing image became one of the most debated moments surrounding his stance.

During a recent appearance on The Magnificent Others With Billy Corgan, Draiman reflected on his family background and why the conflict remains deeply personal to him.

“I come from a family of Holocaust survivors. 90% of my mother’s side of the family was wiped out by the Nazis. My grandfather was in Dachau. My grandmother was in Auschwitz.”

He also explained that members of his family have lived in Israel since the early 1900s.

When asked why he continues to speak so openly on Jewish issues, Draiman said his motivation is rooted in broader humanitarian concerns.

“I’m not trying to be a tribalist, to be honest. I’m trying to be a humanist. I truly do have compassion for the Palestinian people. Truly, truly do.”

He added that much of the criticism aimed at him centers around the shell-signing photo, which critics have cited as symbolic support for military action in Gaza.

Later in the discussion, Billy Corgan asked Draiman whether he would make the same decision again despite the years of backlash that followed.

“I would sign every single piece of military equipment in existence if it meant that Hamas was finally eradicated and that the Palestinian people had a real chance at a real future.”

Draiman went on to describe extremism as a destructive force and argued that removing Hamas from power would create better long-term prospects for both Israelis and Palestinians.

The comments continue a public debate that has followed Draiman for several years, including criticism from artists, activists, and public figures over his views on the ongoing Israel-Gaza war.
