Crossover outfit Extinction A.D. have added another new track to their increasingly busy 2026 release schedule with the arrival of “Insomnia.”
The song marks the seventh single the band have put out this year, continuing a steady run of new material from the group. Vocalist/guitarist Rick Jimenez of This Is Hell says the track was inspired by the constant barrage of disturbing news and the broader feeling of helplessness surrounding the state of the world.
Jimenez explained:
“I can’t be the only one that feels like they’re bombarded with the atrocities of the world on a daily basis, right? I feel like there are constant reminders of human rights violations and the impending doom of the planet and then a ‘brush it off and just go to work’ mentality.”
He continued:
“It’s difficult to break that cycle but understanding it and raging out against it is my first step. Living life with a PEOPLE OVER PROFIT mentality is an act of defiance unto itself today.”
Musically, “Insomnia” takes a more focused approach, with Jimenez explaining that much of the song is built around variations of a central riff.
“‘Insomnia’ is a very enjoyable song to put together musically. The majority of it is variations on one riff throughout with little nuances or key changes separating it from part to part.”
The track also features a personal piece of gear from Jimenez’s past, as he brought out the first guitar he ever owned for the song’s interlude.
“I was also able to use the first guitar I ever owned on the interlude section; a scaled down nylon string acoustic Franciscan guitar that I got in the spring of 1992.”
