Boston goth post-punk outfit Final Gasp have announced their sophomore full-length, New Day Symptoms, due out February 27th via Relapse Records. Alongside the album reveal, the band have shared a new single titled “The Apparition,” accompanied by a haunting, co-directed video from Caleb Gowett and Bill Politis.
Described as a darker and more expansive evolution of the band’s sound, New Day Symptoms builds on the death rock foundations established on Final Gasp’s 2023 debut Mourning Moon while pushing further into post-punk tension, hardcore urgency, and modern anxiety. According to the band, the record taps into fear, frustration, and collective catharsis, channeling those emotions into something both immediate and resonant.
Frontman Jake Murphy explained the concept behind the lead single:
“It’s a story of reality being much more horrifying than fiction. It’s about a captain and his crew on a small boat. A storm came and capsized it, and he and his two crew members were forced to swim to some sort of safety. Ultimately only he survived.”
Murphy added that the song centers on poor decisions and consequences:
“He knew a storm was coming but thought they could make it. It’s all about bad timing and facing the consequences.”
Unlike Mourning Moon, which leaned heavily into raw personal grief and anxiety, New Day Symptoms was written through a more collaborative and democratic process. Murphy noted that the band allowed themselves greater freedom to explore new tones and textures, with producer Arthur Rizk helping to expand their sonic palette during an immersive recording process.
“We blossomed into this group of people that all have similar influences, but see them from different perspectives. We could hear the band beginning a new chapter.”
While the album draws from death rock, punk, and post-punk traditions, Final Gasp aim to balance underground roots with a broader, more communal energy—one shaped by personal trials, alternate perspectives, and acceptance of irreversible outcomes.
New Day Symptoms arrives February 27th through Relapse Records.
